Just bought a brand new 05 sv650
 

hey guys, im new to the site and to riding. Alittle bit of my history, I had a 125 enduro for a couple months and then moved up to a 250 ninja. Both bikes rode well when i got it, but after a month (happened to me on both bikes), after riding for about 15 mins it started to die as i opened the throttle. I was wondering if it was because of the way i was riding. i dont want to do this to my sv 650

I just bought an sv650 with 12,400 miles on it. Yea, its alot of miles but i bought it from a guy who took really good care of it. But being a good judge of character can only take you so far. What are the absolute "have to do's" after buying a bike from a private party? also, i noticed the chains were a little loose and were hitting that part of plastic thats under the upper chain. should i not ride it until its tigtened?

I appologize for how long this post is and how sloppily its written. I appreciate all those whove made it this far and for also those who reply:thumright:

You meat the rubber'y bit on the top of the swing arm? That's there to protect the swinger.

Yeah, definitely go for a tail tidy! +1

Check when the last service was, and approach the bike accordingly -new oil change, check brake pads (maybe get some ebc HH pads), check brake oil etc.

See what it rides like, then mod accordingly :) brakes, suspension, tyres etc

Hi and welcome, looks like a nice clean example you have there.
as above the chain isn't a problem running on the top of the swing arm, this is what the rubbery bit it there for, just check the slack at the bottom of the chain, you should have about 25-30mm of movement in the chain.

I mean the part of plastic thats directly under the upper chain. thats probably tight on your bike but my chains are loose and they are rubbing against the plastic directly under it.

hmm, great tips. ill have to check my bike to see what you guys are talking about as far as the chain. The previous owner was nice enough to give me the last service records. i should find out what the recommended service times are

No it's not tight, it's at the bottom of the chain you want to be worrying about how slack/tight it is.

Nice bike.

Get a fender extender.

Tail tidy is not necessary just improves the looks (if you like that kind of thing). Don't think you were after that kind of thing.

Rear mudguard.

Can: the end bit of the exhaust. You can get a slip-on exhaust can to replace the standard one. A bit pricey, but sounds awesome.

Tail tidy: the plastic bit with the number plate on it, a tail tidy would tidy up that area so it doesn't stick out so awkwardly and looks neat and tidy :)

+1 for the extender, it's an extension to the front mudguard, prevents water getting into the front spark plug and cutting out (do a search on "water in front plug"), common problem with SV's when riding in wet.

I think there should have been a service @ 11k, check it, if not, I'd change the oil, but wouldn't go as far as new brake pads (but do check them!).

Google SV650 + tail tidy, you'll see what I'm on about.
