How to tell if my bike is restricted?
For some reason while riding back from BAT MOTORCYCLES in Biggin Hill this morning, I opened the bike up a little, and just felt there wasn't the power I was expecting, and the rev counter was around 7k "I think" while doing around 60mph, and the engine note was high.
Could my bike be restricted? I don't have a certificate to say otherwise, or is this normal procedure. How I can carry out an eyes only check to be sure? Thanks. |
Re: How to tell if my bike is restricted???
Which gear?

Re: How to tell if my bike is restricted???
If I remember rightly, I was in 5th gear. Going out again to double check my gearing and this problem.

Re: How to tell if my bike is restricted???
if u were in 5th gear u should have been doing bout 70-80 if standard gearing. basicly in 4th gear what ever the revs are, X 10 and u have the speed. ( with standard gearing) so sounds like might be geared wrong. it being restricted wont cause it to rev high.

Re: How to tell if my bike is restricted???
Just get out on the M25 and see what the bike can do. If it's still accelerating nicely at 100 then you'll be unrestricted. I think 33hp bikes max out at anything from 95-110mph.
Good set of bends up Biggin Hill, but I'm yet to get there when there's no traffic (or branches on the road!) |

Looks like I was in the wrong gear, hence the high engine noise.. Just come back from a ride out and all seemed well this time around. :riding:
Yep, good test of cornering over that way, on those S bends - it's helping me out on my corning and roundabouts. M25 could be the next calling, but those winds are still a little choppy at the moment, so a little wobbly at high speeds ;) |

A speed test would tell you defiently tell you if its restricted.
On youre private runway of course. |
Re: How to tell if my bike is restricted?
Reading this has just made me start to wonder. On saturday I touched on 100 and it didnt seem to want to go further but it could be down to riding into the wind and my brain stopping my wrist wanting to move because I'm not used to that speed.
I wouldn't know enough to know the difference probably, and son't really want to try pushing it faster than this yet. Think I'm just being paranoid though! Wouldn't the log book have a stamp to show restriction or something? |
Re: How to tell if my bike is restricted?
Does it stop accelerating as much when you get to 7.5-8k rpm?
That would indicate that it was restricted. As others have said, a speed run would tell you, but you risk losing your license if caught. Have you given the dealer you got it from a call. They might be able to tell you. Basically there are you ways to restrict the curvy SV.. either with different sliders, or with washers in the inlets. To check for the washers: Get the tank up, airbox off, loosen the clips on the inlets and lift the carbs up. You'll be able to see the washers if they're in there. If so, just take 'em out and either sell them or give them to someone on here. ;) If they're not there, it doesn't mean it's not restricted, but if they are then it is for sure. Put everything back together as it was when you're done. Give that a go and post up with what you find HTH |
