Servicing my bike
 

Hi all,

Newbie here - had my K6 SV650S for about 3 years now and looking to change the oil filter and oil myself. I have a couple of questions though and have searched the forum but not found the specifc answer to my questions.

1. I have the lower fairings fitted - do I need to remove these to get at the oil filter?

2. Can I use a pattern oil filter or must I use the Suzuki genuine part?

I will get 3 litres of 10W-40 for the service and a mate is helping me out, but the idea is that I learn how to start looking after my bike properly!

hiya mate,

I've got lowers on mine and managed to do an oil change with them on. It was a bit tricky getting the old filter off but managed it with a screwdriver & an old belt.

The suzuki oil filters are about £12 (if i remember correctly?), not sure where you could get pattern parts from :)

It's easy enough once you've done one yourself :)

You shouldnt have to pay £12 for the oil filter. try Suzuki Spares direct (google them for a phone number), I think they do genuine ones for less than £10.

You might be better off removing the lower fairings just for ease of working. Also, you can have a good clean and inspection while your there.

dont worry, i was robbed by a suzuki dealership in finchley, north london. My dad couldnt beleive i didnt go to the other shop to save 3 quid

Welcome to the site.

1st off where are you based?
As for the oil change, if you have a local store, get yourself down to Hein Gericke, get thier own brand 10w40 oil and a filter (about £20ish all in).
Dont buy oil in 1L bottles it will work out stupid money, better off getting 4L of Semi Synth bike oil. You dont have to use an OEM filter at all. Plenty of companies out there that do pattern parts, champion(halfords) Hi-Flo etc.
I always remove the lowers for ease sake. However, some bolts could be a pig to get off if they havent been removed, so be aware of that.

I'm based in Reading and there's no Suzuki dealership near me but there is a Hein Gericke shop close to home so will enquire about the oil and filter (in fact there's three bike shops on Oxford Road in Reading so I may check them all out)

I am thinking that it would be better to remove the lowers to make it easier to get access to the filter (would be worth removing them anyway just to see how it's done).

According to the service book I need 10W-40 oil but haven't got any specific brand in mind - Halfords motorcycle oil is £24 for 5L and I wouldn't want to pay any more than that.

I only used the tools that came with the bike for the first time at the weekend (removing the battery and trickle charging it) - couldn't believe how easy it was :mrgreen: (thought I was going to have to get the bike taken to a garage as the battery was flat)

I think it's 13.99 for 4L of 10w40 at Hein Gericke.

HG is the way forward... Gotta do my bike this weekend, funny enough... tis only 350 miles late.

Done it already...I'm just across the pond from you...almost spitting distance :)
