New to SV650's: need help with 33hp restrictor

Hi,

Im kinda new to motorbikes, and am getting off an Honda xr125 onto a 2002 SV650s. I have just got my full motorcycle test in N. Ireland, and so im required to be restricteed to 33hp for two years.

Can anyone fill me in on the different lingo and options for getting it restricted and how the different options inpact preformance and fuel consumption and stuff like that.

And then how it works with certificates and proof if I do it myself, with some of the options I see on your forum ("ECU" ???), (im a student with little money and want to keep it as cheap as possible.)

At the minute i have insurance on the SV, with no mention of a restrictor needed, but im not riding much at all. I want to get restricted in case anyting goes wrong. I presume at the moment I am technically uninsured, due to my liecence requiring me to be restricted to 33hp. When I do get organised and restriced, then do i needed to get re-insured, (will the insurance price go down), or have i just validated the insurance myself and then im fine.

Please forgive my ignorance, but i have to start somewhere, and I don't have any mates into bikes at all.

:stupid:

All input much appreciated, please sure your experiences.

Many many thanks,

CRAZZYDAVE

if you can find a second hand 33bhp ecu of either ebay or one of the forum members on here(they do come up occassionally) then it's just a simple swap for the original and you'll be all legal as long as the bike is 33bhp then your legally square imo.

edit dont bother with the above assumed you had a pointy.

No difference to insurance.

Because you are on a carbed bike, the 2 restriction options do broadly the same thing, and there is little to tell between them.

1) is the FI international kit, normally I wouldn't pi$$ on FI international if they were on fire, but this kit works OK. 2 washers which sit under the carbs. Very easy to fit/remove.

2) Suzuki OEM kit, set of carb slides which have a hole in, preventing them from lifting up to normal level. A little harder to fit.

You don't need the certificate.

The ECU method of restriction is NOT applicable to the 1st generation carbed SV's!

Do you mean the fi kit makes the MPG worse than unrestricted, or just not as much increased as expected?? the Fi website is looking £172, that sounds extreemly expencive for "two washers".

Also, at the minute isn't it true that my insurance is currently invalid, due to being unrestricted?
You say I don't need cert, then is it just in the case of a bad accident, that I will need a restriacted bike for my insurance to hold up??Does premium go down with restrictor?

Thanks

£172 is mental yes, find some secondhand.

Premium is the same with restrictors.

Your insurance is practically invalid without restrictor because you don't technically have a license for the bike as it is.

yeah mpg was worse with mine restricted and it should'nt make a difference to your insurance premium though it's best to check with your insurance just incase they need a certificate of fitment or something.

Re: New to SV650's: need help with 33hp restrictor

Thanks alot for help, any other opions welcome,

what does the restrictor actually do to the power, does it dull acceleration, or top speed, of both. What top speed is left after its done by the Fi system.

one other question, does my older bike (2002) not have a Engine control unit, it that why that isn't an option??
:stupid:

Many thanks.
