Electrical problem
 

I've just sold my SV. The bloke picked it up and rode it home 90 miles then phoned to say it wouldn't start. All he gets is a clicking when he tries to turn it over and he says the rev counter and instruments are going mad.

The battery was new last month and I've never had any issues with it.

Anyone any ideas what it could be?

Clicking on the button sounds like the solenoid. What does he mean by clocks going mad? needles spinning round? Curvey or Pointy?

Also possible loose connection to the battery - had that one on my pointy.

Yep. Ebay. Sold as seen, no waranty or guarentee. But, I do understand why he would be a bit p***ed. I feel a little guilty but can hand on heart say that I've run it nearly everyday since it had the new battery last month and have not had any issues with it (or in the two years I owned it).

It's a curvy. He said when the ignition was on the rev counter was going up and down. I've told him to check all the connections so I'll see what he comes back with.

I dont know what with me only ever owning a pointy, do the clocks go round then back down and stop there upon ignition being switched on as a general thing? and do you hear the fuel pump start up on it? every time he hits the button then it clicks and he lets go does the fuel pump restart?

On a curvy you don't hear the fuel pump start and you wouldn't expect the instruments to do anything when turning on the ignition. So that is definitely strange behaviour.

I would start with SK's suggestion that one or other battery terminal may well be loose, it may also be a connection from the battery to the starter relay, or main earth strap, but this is less likely.

He's checked then battery connections and says they look ok. Apparentlt the rev counter was jumping about when he turned the indicator on.

He suspects it may be the rectifier(???) Does that sound likely?

Rectifier i dont know im afraid next as jambo said try the earths, especially as the buyer says the indicators are affecting it.
