Front Forks pitting
 

Hi Everyone. New on today. Sorry if this has been discussed before but I have a 2003 naked SV 650. It has the usual pitted front forks. Can anything be done apart from new or rechroming. If I get second hand forks are they all the same for all years or which ones will fit mine.

Don't waste money on new forks unless you change them for a decent set. A fair few people on here have bodged on GSXR forks which are meant to work well.

Otherwise, you can polish them (they're alloy, they won't rust; just give them a wipe down every so often) or repaint them easily enough.

polish, elbow grease, plenty of ripped knuckles on wet n dry, wire wool and autosol.

Easy peasy to keep clean once done...never re-laquer them.

Or do you mean the upper fork is pitted?

Cos mine are and they keep ripping the oil seals :(

But if its the lowers then as they say, lots of wet n dry or Garyflex blocks to get the worst of it off and then autosol. I did a pair i bought off someone on here last year and it wasn't as tough as i thought it'd be but then again they were already off a bike so thats half the job done i guess.

If it's the actual upper then that isn't good. You can sometimes get away with a little araldite to smooth things over but it's either rechrome or replace time to do it right.

If the lowers then as above.

I think the OP is talking about the stanchions, not the fork legs. Autosol and emery wont work on pitted chromed stanchions. If the pits are in the working area the seals will suffer

Thanks everyone for your help. It is the chrome section that is pitted. They aren't too bad. May have to live with it. Have tried autosol etc but I hoped someone may have a magic cure!!!! Great site.
