New photocards...

Another day, another stupid letter from the DVLA. So I had a think about it, and it isn't time for the tax on the bike yet, or on the car, and the SORN for my non-running VFR isn't due yet either.

So I opened it up, and its the form for the photocard renewal on my licence. Is it really 10 years since I passed my car test? Apparantly so.

The question for the org is a simple one - I've read the scare stories in MCN and around the internets about people sending their licences in and getting entirely different entitlements back. Anyone got any ideas on how to ensure I get back the same ones I sent off, or to prove I had what I claimed to have when it comes back wrong?

As far as I can work out, the only documents I can offer which would be definitive are the test pass certificates, but the DVLA already have those.

Can't you just take a copy of your license... on the photocopier.

That was in one of the scare stories - a police mechanic didn't get any luck from them with a photocopy and a signed letter from his boss. The story in question was in MCN though, so it may be a fabrication.

It's been on Watchdog too - I took mine into a local solicitor and got copies verified.

you can request a data subject request from dvla that they can't refuse, it costs £5 but will tell you all the info that the dvla hold on you.

I haven't done it yet, but intend to get a copy of mine before i do my car test.

If you're fortunate enough to know someone that can, surely you could get a photocopy certified as a true copy?

And if you don't know anyone, a solicitor / accountant will probably do it for about a tenner.

Simple solution. Keep hold of the original documents, take photocopies, get it signed as genuine by a solicitor, if they're giving you problems over the phone or by post, pop into branch and moan to their faces. Sorted first time, according to the watchdog report, which I watched....

Because watchdog is an awesome program.....

Think I might be going for the box marked lost, so I can "find" it again if anything goes wrong. I've got to send a copy to my insurers anyway, so that should cover both bases.
