14 tooth sprocket question
 

I have a 14 tooth Yamaha FZR400 front sprocket that is the same fitment as the SV & was wondering if it will be ok to fit it.
The Sprocket is narrower (Top sprocket in the 1st picture). Obviously made for a smaller chain.

But has the same size splines. I have tried it on the SV & it does fit.

For the sake of £10 for a new one, i would get one that is for the bike/chain size. All i could think of is the narrower sprocket would wear the chain faster!

Running a wider chain on a narrower sprocket is not a good idea. Don't do it on an SV. All sorts of wear/stress issues. Easy to get the right one.

I've done it before now, but only as a last resort (fitted a Triumph Tiger Cub engine with a 3/16" sprocket in a Rickman Micro Metisse with a 1/4" Rickman special rear wheel sprocket, and ran a 1/4" chain, ideally needed to fabricate a 1/4" engine sprocket but Cubs never had them as standard and it is a sprocket with a hub, not a flat plate so would need fabricating/welding and you have to split the engine cases completely to change the sprocket, just too much hassle for a small "toy" bike).

Yeah, the main risk is that the chain is not properly supported and may come off the sprocket.

They arent expensive. Think I used B&C Express for my sprockets.
