Polish, Paint or Powdercoat?
So, I'm looking to have a winter project and have a box of bits that was a K2 650s. The frame. What do i do? 1. Polish it. 2. Paint it? Probably black. 3. Powdercoat it? Also probably black. Pros and cons for each of the above please and what would you do?

Re: Polish, Paint or Powdercoat?
i think the K5 frames onwards are powdercoated black. I think they look great, you could do this :D a black frames curvy, with black wheels and a black engine, and red fairings...yum

not sure, some kind of default thing?

Depends on what you're intending to use the rebuilt bike for. If it's for the road I'd get stuff powdercoated, if it's for the track, then paint it yourself.

powdercoat black
polish will look good for a bit, but wont stay like it for long, and will need polishing reguler, or it will look dull... |
Re: Polish, Paint or Powdercoat?
a polished frame was a very 1990's thing

Powdercoat
If you get it polished you'll need to keep polishing it Paint isn't tough enough |
Re: Polish, Paint or Powdercoat?
Had my swingarm, sidestand & rear footrest hangers powder coated crome silver, looks very nice, but the finish is quite soft for powder coating.
Black chips easy I was told by the guy at the powder coating place, so bear that in mind and make sure you get them to blank off the bits you don't want the powder coat to get into, like bearing surfaces and threaded parts. Otherwise it's a bugger to get off! I have a spare swingarm which I'll probably polish this winter. But that's going to take sometime. That's the dilema. But once it's done, I won't have to worry about it getting chipped, I'll just need to take out shares in Solvol :p |
