Oil leak
 

Right, so thanks to lucky pants (who pointed out a drop from my bike, thinking it was the scottoiler) i have found a leak, but not the common clutch cover leak, this one is from the crankcase side (i think anyway, its the left if that helps).

Should this just be a case of taking the cover off and replacing the gasket or is it much harder that this?

Is it comeing though a bolt at all? If so, the first thing yo try is to put a bit of PTFE tape around the offending bolt(s) and putting them back in an tightening up (hand tight IIRC, those engine cover bolts dont need alot of torque before they strip a thread)

I need to check exactly where its coming from, but would explain why the oil level has been dropping so quickly.

You dont seem too convinced that this is the source of the problem i'd make sure your fixing the problem not just pointing at something and thinking hmmmm thats not right.
Go take the bike for a 10min bimble come home spray de-greaser all over the engine, and wash it all off so your working with a clean (ish) engine. Let it dry and then Cover said engine with Talc powder.
Start up bike, may help if you sit on bike and take it off side stand. After a little blip blip on the throttle. Get off and se if there is a black spot on the talc.

TADA! offending location of leak located.

That is a good idea with the talc, and seems its not necessarily the crank case cover now, as you can see, the oil is coming from much higher up the engine.

I have attacked it with brake cleaner as I don't have any de-greaser, but this has got it nice and clean. Are there any obvious places it could be leaking from, or is it a case of hunt it down and find its hidden behind lots of things?

check the worm-drive pushrod, that goes into the engine, and the engine breather hose?

front sprocket seal, due to an overtight chain?

dunno can't tell by the pic....too much gunk!

Seems the engine is playing tricks on me, its covered in talk now and not a drop has appeared! Will have to leave it I guess, ill keep an eye on the sprocket area too but the chain defiantly isn't and hasn't been tight. Oh and i also discovered a leak form the clutch cover too :(.

Still not convinced this is an engine oil leak. All that oily gunkyness around the front sprocket could easily be fling from your scottoiler. Mine certainly looks mucky around there and drips oil to after a good ride. I wonder if the reason the talc is staying clean is that it is scottoil fling after all?
