Off road kit - what basics do I need?
 

After securing the bike with a deposit:

All I need now are some knobbly tyres and some off road gear.

I've a set of trail boots, and will be looking for a crosser style helmet and goggles.

What else do I need for the basics? Gloves? Armour? What kind of jacket etc?

I don't want to spend too much cash but I want to be safe. I have a road back protector, gloves etc, but doubt they are suitable :confused:

So any tips/links etc?

MX helmet and goggles are OK if it's warm and dry and you're not going too quick

Otherwise they're noisy, cold, wet and a PITA

I have road lids, MX lid and a Tour-X and the Arai is the most usable on and off road...

Look at wulf sport full body armour its the best, i also recommend wulf sport gear to go over this.
Gloves are important to get something thats goes half way up your forearms, for protection and stops mud/crap going back down them.
Make sure your motocross boots are still in good condition and waterproof is very important as well.
I used to have full wulf sport gear untill i crashed at 80mph on the rough, i only broke my collar bone and shoulder when i landed so i know that wulf sport are good.

I use a lightweight motocross glove, padded motocross pants, body armour is a personal preference but I always wear mine.

If your doing all day trips/greenlaning then a decent enduro jacket is a real benefit as they have loads of pockets and usually a clear map pocket too.

Bike shows are always the best place to pick up kit but the dirt store can sometimes throw up some good stuff cheap too.

Lid wise, in the summer I use a motocross helmet and goggles but I do have something like this:-

For longer days out as rightly said by TLW moto helmets can be noisy.

Something like above, you can fit goggles under for the offroad sections and leave the visor up out of the way till you get back to the road.

Any tyre recommendations for my first set of off road tyres?

I'll be doing a range off stuff, fire trails in the Ardennes/Eifel, gravel tracks in Holland, the odd but of road to join things up and may head down to the beach. Something general would be great until I'm sure exactly what type of terrain I'll be concentrating on.

Im using pirellis on mine at the moment, super knobbly and really scary on tarmac but they rip up the dirt really well.

Not sure about the legality issues where your riding but I have got enduro tryes.
Barely road legal motocross tyres but they are legal.
Tyres are much of a personal preference to be honest, just like on the road.
Maxxis do some great knobblies at a good price too.

If you make sure they are an enduro tyre, they will be marked for road use.

The only difference is that they are marked...although there is something about the spacing of the knobblies... but I cant tell the difference unless I look at the markings on the side.

tyres is all about the roads your going to be on wider spaces for softer dirt, gravel you want small spaces and on the super loose dirt thats like a cupasoup you want big thick spaces. make of tyre is like choosing a road for the sv i guess.
as fars helmets goes i use a old motocrossers helmet with goggles in any weather, speed and conditions but i wear a neck warmer, waterproof face mask and earplugs because my two strokes make some real noise.
If i had the money i would visit and show you what you need and how to set your bike up and how to ride at speed on the rough.
I can also teach you how to crash out totaling the bike and only breaking 2 bones! last time i crashed we managed to salvage the brake cables everything else got ripped apart or smashed up on impact/rolling.
