Police Specials?

.. Is anybody on here one? I know there are a few police folk, what are your opinions on 'specials'?

I'm considering it, well I've considered and am going to apply tomorrow and go see what its all about, but not long being 18 I've had to wait.
However, I don't want to do it in Warwickshire where I live, but in Leicestershire (Hinckley & Bosworth hopefully). Only concern is with uni & part time work it maybe too much? ..

But I think if I manage time well, I should be okay, only thing is the training which may be a bit of a hinderance as after that only a minimum of 4 hours are required a week, and I'd be prepared to do like an 8 hour shift.

I don't want to go into policing but am interested by it, however if I have a change of heart after my degree and a few years of working I'd probably look into the police force.

All advice and opinions welcomed as per :)

Go for it mate good luck.

I have no opinion on Specials. I work with some great ones that bust a gut and make a difference, and I know some that are not so good and I clear up after. If you want to get stuck in then good on ya.

You will enjoy the job without doing the paperwork :) x

I was a Special in Warwickshire, based in Warwick. I did love it and usually did the Friday or Saturday night duty. I was 18 at the time and learnt a lot about life.

I walked away in the end though, as I was trying to get into the regulars (I was a civilian at the same time too, so totally committed) but was told that my eyesight wasn't good enough, I know that there has to be regulations, but they were happy enough to allow me to do all that I did as a Special, but not as a regular.

BUT, it was still all worth it!

Nothing, well some very small amount of pounds per shift I think.

My mum was a special for a while and she enjoyed it but back in gloucester apparently not a lot of support was given.

My cousin was a police special there too, said it was good but hasn't said anything regards support.

My mum has been a Special for 25 years, I was kindof brought up in the enviroment.

She loved it (until a couple of years ago and my brother started playing up). In Scotland, Specials used to get paid a retainer of £1000 after tax a year, provided they did a 180 hours. The Scottish Exe scrapped that and although my force still pays it, not sure if any others still do.

Like Shell, I have worked with some fantastic specials, I have also worked with other who have stepped in over the top of me, contradicted what I have said before causing almighty rumbles! Saying that, I have worked with plenty regulars who have done that to me too!!
