Rear Light Mod Question

Ahhh .... Look I'm in the "proper" section rather than the Banter!! WooO HoooO

Right - question for the geeks??

Drew has just pointed out to me that I might be committing an offence by modding my light. I am getting the rear light with the integrated indicators and the concern is that this would reduce the visibility of the rear brake light??

Thoughts and comments please?

As an aside.... Moore Speed Racing are doing the mods for me so I would have thought they will check the output once done??

Wont comment on the legality of it as not 100% sure... I can give you my experience of following somebody with that rear light fitted.

1. It was difficult to tell when they were braking
2. It was impossible to see if they were indicating left or right.

I followed a GSXR with a similar setup and I couldnt see whether he was indicating either.

IMHO its a sh*t mod, it might look better but you are compromising your safety by doing it.

At the end of the day its up to you...

If it's an e-marked piece of kit I believe it's legal (please double check!) doesn't mean it's safe though. I would have thought your brake light would reduce visibility of the indis if anything.

Re: Rear Light Mod Question

I think the issue will be they're not legal in the UK, as there is a minimum distance required between the two indicators.

What this distance is, or even whether I'm right is anyones guess!

+1 to Fizz.

You cannot clearly see if the rider is indicatinh, or braking, or both together. If you want it for the clear lens look on the rear light, then don't wire the indy part up, and leave your existing indicators on.

Yeah!! I think I'm with you guys. You have brought up some very good points. I think I was blinkered by the prettiness of it but the practicality of it is limited.

Thanks guys I will tell them I'm gonna leave it. I love my big, fat, safe indicators. x

They're also an MOT fail due to 'interaction with other lights'

Out of interest if you put led indicators in the standard sidelights on a pointy do you know if this would matt?

Re: Rear Light Mod Question

As far as I'm aware there has to be a legal distance between indicators

Re: Rear Light Mod Question

For MOT as long as they dont cause an interaction with any other light and can be properly seen then they will be fine.

There are legal distances between indicators etc, but thats more a Construction and Use ruling than Motor Vehicle Test Regs, so unlikely anyone would ever be measuring them. If it went for an MSVA test then they would, but other than that I cant see it getting spotted.

Should the bike need inspecting fully for any reason then it may become apparent then

edit should be 240mm between rear and 300 on fronts for motorbikes over 50cc
