Advice needed - road bike pedals/shoes
 

Hi guys,

I need your advice.

Courtesy of the cycle-to-work scheme and HM Govt's enlightened approach to cycling (credit where it's due), my new road-bike arrived about an hour ago. One of these:

As seems to be the way these days, it arrived without pedals.

I need pointing in the right direction regarding what to get. I'm thinking "clip-in" but want to be able to walk in the shoes (which I also need!) when I get off the bike. I also don't want to look like a ****/lycra lout.

I bought a new pair of these to replace my old rusty pair on my commuter bike. Double sided, can be loosened off a lot, and pretty good for the price.

They'll work with any MTB style shoe (which have recessed cleats to allow you to walk around easily). i got some old Specialized ones but I'm not sure they make the ones I have anymore.

Get mountain bike shoes and pedals. The cleats are recessed on these and the shoes look more normal than road bike specific shoes.

Definitely look into the Shimano SPD pedals / shoes as the cleats on the shoes are small and recessed. You can get all type of SPD shoes from boardie type trainers to full on Tour de France stuff.

On my commuter bike some while ago I had these combi-pedals, it it could be used without the pukka bike shoes. You might want something more racy for your shiny steed though.

Food for thought there..... and some good suggestions, I think, bearing in mind that I know squat-all about spds, etc. My last road bike had toe-clips and straps :lol:

If you want to be able to walk in them. Then go for SPD's

They'll clip in but the cleat is recessed in the shoe. So off the bike its just like walking in a pair of trainers.

Dont get road pedals and cleats, especially stay away from the "LOOK" design cleats as you cant walk any distance at all in them. If you do end walking in them you end up destroying the cleat and also your shoe.... dont ask me how I know this ;)

Another vote for shimano spuds - I have got a pair of MTB XTR pedals on my road bike, and XT I think on the mountain bike - picked up the XTRs brand new for £40 (normally over £100).

If you dont want you shoes to look too bikey then how about these MT52 shoes:-

Good sole on them for walking in, so you won't look like bambi on ice when off the bike.

Every now and again Aldi (or is it Lidl?) do bike gear, including SPD shoes cheap and not bad quality. Last year I picked up a pair of mtb shoes, two pairs of thermal leggings, two long winter jerseys, and a jacket for £75 :cool:

have a look at some time attack (think thats what they are called) or just get normal pedals as cleats are nesary, shimano DX pedals are good also some crank brothers eag beaters are brill but cost £££ (had a pair broke them doing DH with them)

He has a road bike and those are pretty targeted at the MTB crowd IMHO.

And a pair of Shimano MT31 shoes for the local bike shop. Kinda cheapish, but I can always upgrade later :-)
