How many miles have you done in a day?
Going to Jerez Moto GP in May.
Trying to get my head round what we need to do on the blast back to catch the ferry to Portsmouth. Want to leave Jerez about 5am, earlier if need be, on the Monday morning and do the 600miles to Santander by 3.30pm. Do able at sane-ish speeds? Probably 80-85mph normally. Will have sat-nag which will hopefully cut down on the flat-out m/way blasting in a mild state of ferry-catching panic. Anybody done this journey in one hit? How many miles have you done in 10-12hrs? Any advice? (Apart from Red-Bull and double-dunting on the fags?) |
Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
No worries mate. Used to do 560 miles up from Cornwall on a Friday and back again on a Sunday night pretty regularly and my bum is still on one piece. Steady 70-75 all the way. I think it helps if you're in your 20's though.
I guarantee you the Spanish roads will be better than the M6 on a Friday/Sunday. Send us a postcard. :) |
Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
I rode from the Central Massif region of France to le-Havre in about 8 hours. 380 miles. It is bloody hard work all in one go and you will struggle to maintain an average of 80. It would be better in you could do half of it the day before. Also, having to keep an eye on the time is not conducive to a safe ride.

Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
I did about 600 miles from Amsterdam to PL, in 10h, which included a 45 minute flood stop in Holland, about 100miles of rain in Germany @60mph and getting lost due to road works. Apart from that I've kept the curvy at ~100-110 mph, I was a bit tired but ok to do 300 miles the next day.

Bordeaux to Calais in the weather only to be likened to what they've been having oop norf lately.
Took ten hours. Was much quicker on the way down, as it was sunny. I can do 235 miles in just short of four hours. Peg can do the same journey in much less when he gets a wiggle on, does it every week. |

Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
I used to reguarly do balloch to guildford 457 miles in the car, did it on the bike twice - never again. It takes about 7 hours in the car, took about 10 on the bike. Had to stop lots more for petrol, then had to pee, then needed coffee to warm me up, then pee again, whereas in the car I only had to stop once for fuel.

Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
I was talking about this the other day ..... i have been absolutely useless on 2 wheels ..... as soon as I think long journey I think nice, warm, quiet car with tunes !!! lol.
Probably the most I've ever done on a bike in one day is about 120miles ..... and that was on my DAS test day (test centre was near Brighton IIRC). |
Re: How many miles have you done in a day?
Even if you're very fit and used to long rides you will be dangerously tired, pretty cramped and very stressed if you try to do it in one day. Especially if you have a ferry to catch at the end of it.
It will also be the thing you remember about what should be an epic and enjoyable trip! Do yourself a favour and split the journey into more reasonable chunks. |
