Re: Wanted: Honda XR600R engine
Tim, could you post pics as you go along? Its always interesting to see inside of engines and to follow the diagnosis of a problem, particularly as in this instance I would assume no error on your part in the problem!
Good luck with the engine search by the way |

Re: Wanted: Honda XR600R engine
How did it go bang Tim. The usual problem with them is that they tend to burn a bit of oil, get allowed to run a bit low (especially on a long trip) and then they cook the top end. Second hand bits might be hard to find I'm afraid.

Re: Wanted: Honda XR600R engine
I was riding along (Helmsley - Kirkby Moorside) when I started to run low on fuel(Helmsley had no petrol only diesel ), big shudders, engine missing etc, switched the tap to reserve , the bike carried on stuttering for a little longer than expected (as if the fuel took a while to get through) then carried on running, but with more of a rattle sound. I filled up, then retraced my steps, accompanied by the bad noises, turned off at Pockley, hit a slight hill, power started to really die, tried some different gears, engine stopped, locking the rear as we rode uphill. Plenty of new oil left in the beast, I'd only done approx 90 miles since leaving home (and about 100 miles since the last oil and filter change).
I think the judders caused by the running low on fuel revealed an underlying problem of some sort. I free wheeled the bike back down the hill to the main road, cancelled my lunch plans, arranged my dad to pick me up with the sheep trailer a few hours later. I then pushed the bike a couple of kilometres to Helmsley (including up one hill), met Puny there and had a few pints of black sheep whilst waiting for recovery. Since then the bike has been on a recovery truck to Hull docks, I've pushed it up the ramp to the ferry, onto and off the ferry and then recovered it from Europort using my trailer. I've found one engine at a breakers so far, but it's a bit pricey. |
