Nails in tyres
 

As the title would suggest my tyres have managed to pick up a load of nails and screws causing me to replace both front and rear tyre, normaly i wouldnt be too anoyed but the fact that these were pretty new tyres (around 1600 miles) and that the reason why they got in there in the first place. While i was heading out of a swimming pool carpark the speed bump on my side of the road had been removed but they had not bothered to remove the massive bolts that were holding the speedbump to the ground, so not wanting to ruin my tyres i avoided the massive bolts sticking out the ground only to realise that there was a nice big pile of screws and nails in the middle of the road in between two of the bolts.

Now for the point of this thread, am i just going to have to pay up the amount for the tyres and accept that its just one of those things or are the swimming pool somehow responsible for this as it is their carpark and it would take seconds to make that piece of road clean and of no harm to any vehicles.

Take pictures, submit a formal complaint pointing out that they'd left a destructive obstacle, and provide a bill for the works.

Don't hold your breath on a win though.

Swimming pool? is it a council owned swimming pool? If it is then it's your council you should speak to. Get some pics and write a strongly worded letter, they'll either pay out or tell you where to go. Either way it wont happen fast so you'll prob be best replacing the tyres and sending a copy of the reciept along with the complaint.

Just to be different (and because I'm really an unsympathetic bugger) I'm going to suggest that the ultimate responsibility for riding over the nails/screws rests with you, the rider. If you are going slowly enough to pick a route through what appeared to be some bolts sticking up out of the road then you should have been able to see the rubbish between them, especially as you describe it as a "nice big pile of screws and nails".
Sorry mate, sure the contractors are dipsticks for leaving it like that, but you need to look where you're going to.

Heard the saying if you don't ask you don't get?
While I agree with much of what Red Herring has written, it is not always that simple.
It might be night time and the debris can not be seen etc.
I know this probably isn't the case here, but given that whoever owns the carpark, be it the council or private, have employed a contractor to carry out a job that hasn't been done to a satisfactory standard I would look into it.
It is a dilemma I know, in the week before christmas I hit a pothole (it was in the dark, wet and oncoming headlights so had no chance of seeing it) in the car and it wrecked a tyre, put the tracking out and has cracked one of the wheels, at a total cost of £400 for repairs. The pothole was repaired the following day so no chance of taking photographic evidence.
