bike milage. whats too high?
im looking at a cbr600f and its got (what i would think for a bike) high milage at 39k im going to take a look at it to assess its condition as this is really the deciding factor but what would you call high milage on a bike? i mean would anyone part with thair cash for a bike wit 45k on it for example?
is it asking for troubble? will i be buying a moneypit and will it be worthless plus all the usual questions regarding high milage bikes. So wadda ya think folks? |
Re: bike milage. whats too high?

Re: bike milage. whats too high?
Im no expert, but surely a bike with higher miles that has been regularly serviced and well maintained must be a better ownership proposition than a lower mileage bike that has been mistreated and not looked after.
When i bought mine it had 30k on the clock and there was another in the garage with only 8k, but it was immediately obvious that the higher mileage bike had been better cared for and thats the one i went for. 6k miles on and i havent regretted that decision. |
Re: bike milage. whats too high?
mileage only comes into question if something really doesnt look right. Otherwise it's reflected in the price normally.

Re: bike milage. whats too high?
if its been well mainted im a firm believer in buy the bike on what you see... check for services, and major work, look at suspension at these miles possibly.
if its been used and mainted well then i am an inclination that can sometimes be better than a bike left in a garage taken out once a month never mainted... mice in your garage? seen them in an airbox before! not to mention damage to wiring they could cause. |
Re: bike milage. whats too high?
Id not rule out the higher mileage bike either, but you should think about resale value. How long will you keep the bike and how many miles will you put on it?Realistically how much will it be worth when you sell it?Having thought about that, buy the high mileage bike but only pay a sensible price for it.

Re: bike milage. whats too high?
Its a honda, it will go on for well over double that, had 2 slightly older ones at work not long ago with 80k ish on them, still going strong and they sold

Re: bike milage. whats too high?
I have a Honda with 98K on it. I also have a Kwak with 40K on it - Honda is still going despite much abuse from former owners, and the Kwak is in better condition now that when I bought it despite having twice the mileage. Go on condition and service history as others have said. If it looks well cared for and they can show they have done the required servicing on it then go for it if the price is right. It will affect resale value but by how much will depend on how you look after it. Use the mileage as a bargaining point, and make sure all consumables have plenty of life left, or use that to knock them down some more.

Re: bike milage. whats too high?
used to have a hornet with 59k on it. no worries at all. mates vfr is approaching 100... as long as the price reflects the mileage do it.
