Done a valve clearance check, how do I preceed now?
 

I've just spend the day checking valve clearances and I'm not entirely happy with them.

In the FRONT EXHAUSTS I can get a 0.2mm feeler in them, but its a little tight. 0.19mm felt okish and at 0.15 there was still a little friction, but not much. (0.2 is the mimimum for exhausts)

In the FRONT INLETS I can get a 0.1mm in, a 0.12mm feels tight, a 1.4mm very tight. I think this one's ok then. (0.1 is the mimimum for exhaust)

In the REAR INLETS I can get 0.1mm feelers in, although they are a little bit tight.

In the REAR EXHAUSTS I couldn't get a 0.2mm in, 0.19mm went in but tight, and 0.18 went in ok but there was friction.

I guess therefore that work needs doing, particularly on the exhausts.

I have read that it is very difficult to shim them at home, apparently its a CCT out job which is extremely fiddly.

So, what is a mechanic likely to charge? It's a bit annoying that I'll have to put the bike back together to ride it to a mechanic, and then pay an extra couple of hours labour to strip the bike again, which is something I can do myself.

It's a job you're either unwilling or unable to do yourself. If someone else does it for you they'll want paying - that's hardly unreasonable - or am I missing something?

FWIW; I don't think it's a hard job, clearly it's more involved than simple checking, but as long as you're careful and methodical you'll be fine.

Camchain tensioners aren't difficult to remove or replace, and a holding tool can be made in a few minutes from a bean can and string with scissors.

Annoyed at having to put it all back together again, only to have to pay for someone else to strip it back to how it is now.

Well if CCTs aren't too much of a problem then I'd be up for it. Do you know of any threads in particular that detail the procedure, or can you enlighten me on the bean can and piece of string(?!) method.

You can have my cam tensioner tool i made if you want mate, finished doing mine last week. Its really easy to do honestly, add me to you msn.

Two of my exhaust one were out too.

Ok, thanks, I'm intrigued as to why this job requires special tools and what exactly they are. I haven't had time to properly research the job yet but thought it'd be hard based on the blueproof.com write ups, although I've seen a YC post saying she's whiney!

Basically it's a double head screw, the bottom thread drews out the plunger the top holds it in place, it's a 30 min job to make your own tool for it. Bottom is a winder, top is a holder.

In answer to your original question, I've been quoted £150 from one place near me and £45 for carb balancing. He was giving me the big sell saying he looks after loads of race bikes etc :(
Whereas RJS superbikes, who I use to fit my tyres quoted me £85 for valve clearance check and shim. £15 to balance the carbs. I had no hesitation booking it in with Great guys there really freindly. I only phoned another garage to get a comparison cost as I had no real idea what it'd cost.
Incidently the guy at RJS has got an sv650 track bike :D

I know that you're not near me but if anyone around Leicester needs any work doing check out www.rjssuperbike.co.uk Oh and they do look after race bikes, the Hawk kawasaki 2010 bikes were there on the dyno when I was there.

Lol, shes too good for me mate.

The tool takes 5 minutes to make from a hack saw blade with a rotary tool, it just looks like a key, its nothing special, it holds the tension off the tensioner whilst you secure it. I dont need it now, so am happy to post it to you.

The hardest bit is the timing, but once thats clear in your head its also simple. Where i got confused is not realising that both pistons on a twin are almost at tdc together, i thought one was up and the other down. You got the genuine sv650 workshop manual thats knocking about? the haynes i had wasnt at all clear.

Right, I managed to get the CCTs out, was a bit of a pain and I had to modify my allen key, but got there in the end.

The cam shafts are also out.

Beabert - Are there any pictures knocking about of a home made CCT tool? I've downloaded the manual from here so the pics arent very clear. I did take lots of photos before I took the cam shafts out thought.

I'll be phoning round tomorrow for shims.
