12V socket

im possibly driving to the moto gp in catalunya, and i want to buy a 12v socket to charge my iphone while im driving, i have one question about these tho, i know they come with fuses, but when the bike is up at running the socket will be getting like 14.5v, which im suspecting might be damaging to my iphone

i had a cheap Chinese plug>usb charger for my ipod touch a while back which ran at 5.2v rather than the 5v a usb port is ment to be, and this properly messed up the touch screen, so an extra 2.5v worries me

is this a problem?

Just charge it while you stop?

Could you not put a resistor in the circuit?

Its the same voltage as you get through a car charger? Surely proper iphone ones are suited for this?

In theory.

Buy a cheapo 12v connector.
Buy needed fuse.
Buy OEM Apple charger.

Thats what I did when I made mine, just wasnt an iPhone.
Havent tried charging it with the bike running though... :\

Wait for someone with more electrical sense than me. :)

Re: 12V socket

get a £5 12v regulator in the line before the socket

click on it for details

I'd be surprised if they did. Easy enough to add though

I sincerely doubt that the 0.2V difference caused your problem, and also raises the question of how you measured it - 5.2V open circuit will most likely drop to 5V or below under load, due to internal resistance in the source. Even batteries vary by more than 0.2V over their charge cycle, and also with varying temperatures.

I would expect a car socket to go even higher than the SV's, as I believe cars tend to charge at a slightly higher voltage than bikes, which is why they recommend jump starting a bike from a car with the car engine off, or else the reg/rec gets fried.

Re: 12V socket

I put a power socket on the bike. In Tesco i found a Griffin plug that goes into the socket. It has 2 usb connections and it came with a black iphone usb charger lead. Works very well and powers my satnav as well as charges the phone no troubles at all. Only cost under 12 quid. I had originally got a plug that goes in the power socket and has connection for a single usb, from ebay but that was crap and did not work.

This is what i got and has a resettable fuse
