Help - snapped bolt in rear caliper.
 

so i was over hauling the rear calliper this evening went to unbolt it from the carrier as its siezed and went and snaped it, my bolt removel tool wont shift it any ideas!!

It is not a normal bolt, just sliding pin. You need to batter it out from other side.

ahh.... is this the one you drill from the other side? there was threaded on the top of the bolt, is it threaded in the carrier?

Thing in carrier is meant to slide freely in rubber bushing IIRC

Essentially as YC says that 'bolt' should just slide in and out of that hole, I'd drill it, tap it and stick a bolt in, soak it in penetrating fluid (plusgas etc, not WD40) for a while then heat it and pull.

You may also succeed by using a blow lamp and burning the rubber out.

Yeah if you use a stud then you should be able to thread a washer and nut on through a socket to pull the thing.

Good evening all.


I've encountered this in the past on several occasions. They can be a touch stubborn to say the least, as the plain section of the pin slides on the metal of the carrier, & not a rubber bush. They can appear to be welded into place.
If you drill a small hole (4-5mm) on the back of the carrier over the end of the pin, you'll be able to fill it with penetrant. Let it soak for a while, heat up the carrier with a blowlamp, & as Yorkie so eloquently puts it, 'Bash the beggar out' via the hole you have drilled.

You have a 50/50 chance of success, as the contact area is quite large, & you can only hit it so hard, as the carrier is made from alloy, & will most likely crack if over walloping occurs.

Well after 24 hours soaking in plugas and an 1.1/2 hours in the vice geting the crapola beaten out of it, it still wont budge!! WTF. Got a carrier and caliper of fleabay for 35 squid problem solved..... i hope.......
