Brake caliper seals
I'm in the process of stripping and rebuilding my calipers. To give an idea, they are ~4 years old from new.
Triumph Service book says, that I should: -Discard and replace the 4 bolts that hold the two caliper sides together (x2) -Replace all dust and piston seals (8 pots in total) -Replace the small seal between the caliper body where the fluid gallery is. (x2) Ok, I knew these were going to be expensive, but I just got a quote back of ~$500  Now, while I don't want to cowboy it, is it entirely necessary to replace all these bits? The book explicitly says "discard and replace" with regards to the above, not "inspect and reinstall"! However, from my initial clean last night, all the seals and bolts look in pretty good condition and the only ones which are a distorted are the small seals between the 2 caliper fluid galleries (which are only $3 ea) and I intend to replace anyway. So, should I follow the book to the letter or employ a bit of common sense with the actual condition of the parts? Any thoughts, much appreciated! Cheers Luke ps. Bike is an early 2006 Triumph Daytona 675 (if that matters) |
Re: Brake caliper seals
I've always re-used seals unless damaged.
Bolts on the other hand its a bit risky depending on the type of bolt, if they are stretch bolts I'd not re-use them. That said the safety factor is probably pretty high so its probably OK... Druid |
Re: Brake caliper seals
last time i had the calipers looked at the seals were reused. it worked and they were better than previously. however i replaced them with new ones just before i sold it and couldnt believe the difference the new seals made. i wouldnt hesitate to do it again.
bolts i would think about. |
