Lowered Pointy - anyone added an aftermarket shock?
 

I've got the fork internals to upgrade the front suspension on the pointy but to keep things balanced and more to the point to do it while Ive still got 2 bikes I want to do the rear shock at the same time. For all the looking on here and elsewhere online no one seems to talk about doing the rear shock change on a pointy.
ANyway following on from DaveP's thread with the list below:

If i get the 636 which seems to be the popular choice it will raise the back by 10mm so to compensate and cos Im a stumpy little fecker I've got the 40mm dog bones to lower it.

WHAT I WANNA KNOW IS HAS ANYONE ADDED AN AFTERMARKET REAR SHOCK TO THIER LOWERED POINTY???

636 shock is hard for pointy. I have one here from C1 model if you want to try it

cant hurt to try fit it i spose :)
Im gonna start the forks soon no idea how long it'll take or what Im doing it could be fun.

i fitted a gsxr1000 01-02 shocker to my bike and its works fine, the spring rate is the exact same but i have alot more adjustment, still need to set it up but it was an improvement over the stock with it set as i got it.

I would recommend GSXR shock as replacement. They are almost the same length. Choose GSXR600 K4-K5 if you are happy with spring rate or GSXR1000 K3-K4 if you're on the heavy side.

I'm 145 lbs, and 600 shock feels about right. Wasn't very hard to install either. And the damping is divine :)

I've been thunkin' and if I've got;
03-04 SV650 330mm 430# <<<==== stock 2nd gen...
Then to replace it with:
01-02 GSXR1000 329.5mm 430#

Seems a bit silly, its petty much like for like. Is the benifit in that I'd have more settings etc to play with on the gsxr shock?

Also, if I lower the back by 40mm I'll need to do something with the front surely to keep the geomety of the bike set up correctly. Is it as simple as exposing 40mm of fork leg though the top yolk? Im guessing not but am I getting my self into the super complex world of custom suspsension set ups now?

You can't pull the forks up 40mm, you'll probably hit the rad at full bump.

"Correct" geometry, what is that? Stock? Stock geometry is a compromise.

Yeah, improvement of that GSXR shock is you get better damping.

Didnt even consider that sort of thing.

Yeah I guess it would be the stock geometry I was trying to maintain, but thats what I was getting at really. Do I stick with the stock geometry or is it going to be better if I go personalised and listen to you and Drew C next time your talkin about wht it all means.

Ah so it is the same, just slightly better, hmmm is it worth the £60ish quid for the better damping?
