Stock Rubber

Just a quicky, but does anyone think the stock rubber that comes with new SV's is rubbish. Been out today in the rain and they feel crap.

I used stock rubber for 6k or so. It did the job, but once I got new rubber it felt ten times better. I would never change tyres just for the sake of it, but then again, I couldn't afford to! :p

There are better tyres, but IMHO they arent as rubbish as some people on here make them out to be.

I did a fair few winter / wet miles on them and there is grip there, you just cant always feel it. I have ridden on supposedly better tyres than the Dunlop D220's that felt just the same in similar conditions.

If you have money to burn or can afford it by all means change them for something else. ( Look in the tyre section further down the forum front page ) but personally as per the poster above. I wouldnt throw them away just for the sake of it.

And tyre choice is a very personal thing. While there is consensus on some tyres, they all have fans and haters.

Avon Storms or Michelin Pilot Road2 seem to be the most popular choices, but I'd wait until the ones you have are in need of replacing. As Fizzwheel said, they aren't as bad as some people make out. My Versys had the D221s fitted when I got it, which are virtually the same as the stock SV rubber - they only lasted 4500 miles before they needed changing and never let go on me. I didn't like the way they felt so rode accordingly and stayed upright.

You'll find that hardly any tyres have matching treads front and back, I think the last tyres I saw that on were Dunlop TT100s in 1982

Bt021's have the same thread... But they suck for fast road ridind, great for touring probably.

I found the standard rubber fine by the way, they got a hard time on the road and a couple if trackdays and never gave me one bit of a slip. They are never going to be the best as you get budget tyres on a budget bike but it's probably not worth changing them until they are ready.

I can hardly talk though as I am about to take my bt021's off with probably 3k - 4k left in them in favour of some power 2cts.
