HELP! Gen 2 engine in gen 1 sv650 Question!
I blew my motor in my gen 1 01 sv650. I swapped it out with a 06 gen 2 engine. I read you need to swap out the alternator rotor because they are different.
My problem is, I cannot get the rotor off the Crankshaft!! is there anyway to keep it and make it work? I have a trackday tomorrow and this is all thats holding me up. thanks |
Re: HELP! Gen 2 engine in gen 1 sv650 Question!
I can't imagine that the altenator outputs from either engine would be different enough to matter. The parts may be different, but they'll all work together I'd have thoguht?
Any evidence of this difference being significant? Jambo Edit: If the timing rotor is integrated that may be what you're looking to change, but I can't remember how it's setup on an SV I'm afraid. |

Why can't you get the rotor off? You got puller?
Try just fire it up see what happens :-P (N.B I take no responsibility if the timing is close enough to run but pink like hell and grenade your engine) |
Re: HELP! Gen 2 engine in gen 1 sv650 Question!
ESR: do you use it on the road?
If not, do you need alternator at all? |
Re: HELP! Gen 2 engine in gen 1 sv650 Question!
You do because it has pickups for ignition
If you want to go total loss you can machine it down and knock magnets out or buy one already done like that. |
Re: HELP! Gen 2 engine in gen 1 sv650 Question!
WOW! thanks guys for the replys! I have a puller and it stripped trying to get the rotor off! so now I'm wondering if i can leave it in and re-configure the wiring for it. seems to have a different ignition signal.
I use the bike both on the road and on the track whenever possible. But i would consider running total loss as a last resort so I can make the trackday. But I would like to try to possibly change the wiring or something to make use of it if possible. Ive never had this much trouble pulling a rotor before! seems to be a problem with sv's However the rest of the swap went fairly smooth! |
Re: HELP! Gen 2 engine in gen 1 sv650 Question!
weld a bloody big nut to the end of the flywheel as a last resort.
The alternators themselves are likely the exact same it is the pickup coil and notably the location of the pickup coil that is concern. Wiring is similar, 2 wires for pickup... but if ignitor box is programmed to interpret them differently then it won't work right. |
Re: HELP! Gen 2 engine in gen 1 sv650 Question!
Well it looks like I'll keep trying to remove the rotor. gonna try a different style puller and se if I have better luck. I'll keep you all posted

If you get to point of destructive methods be careful not to grind into crank ;)
