Changing Tyres Yourself?
Is it possible to change them yourself with a crowbar, a bit of elbow grease and a good foot pump? Anyone done this?
Just got a good deal on some avon storms and have contacted 3 local tyrebars/garages and they want £30 to change them over. Not so good now |
Re: Changing Tryes Yourself?
if you got a good deal on the tyres then why not use the savings you made to get them fitted professionally just in case you cause damage to the rims?

I take mine off myself then pop the new ones half on, get charged less then. I hate putting the last rim on, its so frustrating.

Re: Changing Tryes Yourself?
Have a look at one of these
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MANUAL-TYRE-CH...item2c4e5a7b2b Or the slightly easier version http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sealey-Wheel-T...item35a385f218 But you need a compressor for the bead breaker and you can get an old one for less than £200 if you keep your eyes open and have a bit of luck, me and Squirrell were looking at one but we did'nt have a compressor at the time so didn't bid. It went for about £170 I think.. but could be wrong. Then you have to balance them You can buy manual balancers, you can even buy attachements for a paddock stand to balance wheels. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sealey-Motorcy...item5d2875c37b Or read this http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcyc...-tire-changer/ Not done it myself but looking in to it, getting new boots for the bike today, the difference between taking the wheels in or taking the bike in and them having to remove re-fit the wheels was £35. So money saved.. Nice one.. HOWEVER, it's still costing £202 for the pair and just wondering how much cheaper I might be able to get them for on the interweb if I could fit them myself. But if I did go down this line I want a solution to do car tyres also, or more specifically something to cope with off road tyres so it's just a seed at the moment |

Found somewhere that'll do both for £20, which isn't too bad |
Re: Changing Tryes Yourself?
Jesus don't use a crowbar!
You need a big vice to break beads and 3 levers. Buy levers, they will pay for themselves. |
Re: Changing Tryes Yourself?
Use the weight of a bike on its stand to break the bead, i used my 125 stand pivoted then jumped on the peg lol.
