Swindon Dilemma.
Just been offered an interview in Swindon:(
It's for my old job that I left 5 years ago. The company was always very good to me, great people there, very good package in all and some travelling, but I left because I wasn't keen on settling in Swindon and myyoungest was just starting senior school. 5 years on and I've just starting sending out my CV to a few recruitment agencies, when I get a call saying that my former employer is very keen to offer me an interview. My dilemma is, do I move to Swindon. Anyone that's ever been there will know exactly what I mean. I moved away from Peterborough 16 years ago for the same reasons. I might be prepered to commute a few miles each day, 20 miles max. Can anyone recommend a good place to live in that part of the country. |
Re: Swindon Dilemma.
Personally I've always liked the look of Marlborough, but I've never lived there so I don't really know how it stacks up.

Re: Swindon Dilemma.
Swindon its self is a ****e hole, but a 5 min drive out of the town in any direction and you are in some good countryside.

Re: Swindon Dilemma.
Come over to Chippenham(ish) and join the fold.
Just realised I've never actually been INTO Chippenham, just drove around/slightly through it. Where's Cuffy when you need him? |
Re: Swindon Dilemma.
Cricklade is a lovely large village, and very close, or as said already, Chippenham, Marlborough, Lechlade, Wroughton (lovely village).....it all depends on your maximum distance. But all of these tend to be very traditional Cotswolds styled villages. Only problem is they are quite pricey.
The only places in Swindon itself I would consider is the new builds which are springing up all over the place on the outskirts....like the ones near the Orbital Shopping Park. I was an ex Swindonite.....but sure some of the others will be along shortly. |
Re: Swindon Dilemma.
said company put me up in a flat for 18 months they're a good employer. I had a look at some of the aforementioned villages, whilst nice I considered them to be still too dependant on swindon.
Ideally we'd like to be close to a historical town with great shopping. |
Re: Swindon Dilemma.
Well the nearest to you for that will be Bath. Bit of a lick out of a commute to swindon tho.

Chippenham town centre itself is crap, no decent shops, pubs are ok'ish. It's certainly no thriving Metropolis. As for housing area's like all places there are some desirable and some that are not. I live not to far from the motorway (1 mile) and Tracy commutes to Swinedown every day, on average it's a half hour journey. If you need any advice about the certain area's then give me a shout, lived around these parts for over 30 years. Avoid Lacock like the plague ;) |
Re: Swindon Dilemma.
I was looking at places such as Stroud, Chippenham, Cirencester, Cheltenham somewhere with easy access to the A420.

Re: Swindon Dilemma.
I actually liked living in Swindon.. (awaiting the barrage of stones ;)) and missed it quite a lot when living in London. The only problem I had was that after 2 years of bachelor's live there there were no more women I was able to hit on and be rejected ;)
Seriously though, the only reason for me to move was that all the jobs I was being offered were not really interesting, i.e. I wanted to do international recruitment projects and all the agencies around only catered for local businesses. Accommodation-wise you cannot beat Swindon for prices.. For places outside Swindon, I would look at Cirencester, Chippenham and Marlborough HTH |
