Sv650s cutting out @ 80mph.
 

Newbie, so please be patient.
I was on the motorway today, outside lane @ 80mph, 6000revs and suddenly my engine cut out completely!!! I coasted her onto the hard shoulder and tried to restart-but nothing. The starter motor sounds like it's trying to tick over but not engaging.
I jumped off, took the keys with me and called the RAC.
I went back, turned ignition on, pressed fob for imobiliser but no usual flash of indicator, tried to start and the same noise, ticktickticktick, from the starter motor.
RAC fella arrived checked fuses, ended up bypassing the battery feed to the starter motor and it started up no probs. Turned off, tried again the usual way and ticktickticktick!! long and short of it- got the bike home- he looked at it for another 50 minutes and still couldn't resolve it. Said Google was my best bet- I thought you guys were my best bet- hence my post-
Anybody have a clue or similar experience. This dude was well into his bikes but was Conpuzzled.

do a search on charging/ reg/rec, it's all been posted before.

Cheers for that Mark- I had tried doing a search but new to biking so wasn't sure which key words to use.
Reg/Rec? they are?

regulator rectifier , controls the output voltage of the alternator, there are tests listed to check it's working correctly, if not it'll do very much what you appear to be suffering from.

If the reg has gone then it will porbably have fried the battery as well (In my expeierence this has been the case)

If you need to know what to look for etc, then drop me a line. Did the breakdown man try to jump it off the battery?

He did, however the starter motor wouldn't engage- he checked the battery and said it was fine. He said it was unlikely to be the battery due to the original issue of cutting off at 80 mph.
It started fine on a bump and as I said when he bypassed the battery altogether. He was almost certain it was something electrical and thought perhaps a fuse or the immobiliser was causing some kind of interferance.

With those symptoms you describe it is next to impossible to be an immobiliser problem.

1/ an immobiliser cuts the feed to the ignition and fuelling system, meaning it would not start with a direct zap to the starter motor. (battery bypassed)
2/ they also cut the feed to the starter solenoid meaning you would not get the tickticktick

the tickticktick is a near-cert sign that the battery is FLAT. The fact that it started fine with a jump start is another sign it is FLAT.

The only way your battery will end up flat at 80mph is a charging fault. All the signs point to this.


Charge the battery, try start it.
If it starts, get a multimeter on it.
After this, find out why it isn't charging :)
