Tyre pressure drop of 2 psi in 24 hours.
 

My OH checked his pressures yesterday on his 06 zx6r to find the front was down to 9psi. He got the bike 7-8 weeks ago and hasnt checked them since (yes i know, hes a ****, i tell him regularly:-)).
Yesterday he pumped it up to 35.7psi and ive just checked and its already down to 34.0 in just 24 hours.

I wouldnt be happy with this if it was my bike, please can someone confirm that im correct in thinking this needs sorting before we leave for Wales on Friday, 2 psi in 24 hours isnt right is it??

It might not be, but it could possibly due to the tyre pressure being effected to changing ambient temperatures.

I.e. on a hot day you'll get a different reading from a tyre than you will on a cold day...

Of course he could just have a slow puncture, which personally I'd want to get it checked before I did a long or big ride on that bike.

Some tyres and rims hold pressure better than others. My Corsa111,s tend to loose about 1 lb psi per day and they are newish,no punctures. One thing I have done in the past is taken them up to 50 lbs psi and left the bike for 24 hours when new tyres fitted to seal the rim-----obviously drop back down to riding pressure before using the bike.
As the loss is so small I doubt if you would find anything with soapy water while the tyres/wheels are on the bike but worth a try,especialy round the valves and valve seat.

I'd change the valve as a matter of course, they are only a pound or so, has the tyre previously been plugged ? might be worth having it checked, also another thing is if wheels have been polished it can bleed through the alloy and loose a little that way.

But Mac is right, over inflate the tyre (within reason) take it off the bike and bounce it while turning it around so the whole tyre gets an impact, then re-adjust the pressure and re-fit.

or of course just take it to a tyre place....:smt102

Are you sure it didn't just lose that 2 PSI whilst you took the gauge off and re-applied it, i mean 1.7 PSI is nothing... When you pump the tyre up always do it 2 PSI more to compensate for tht loss when you remove the guage.

Recheck after a couple days if its gone down 5 or more then best thing to do is remove the wheel and pump it upto 45 PSI, fill up your bath and place the wheel under the water, any leak around the rim/valve will show up.

an expensive gauge is accurate to +-0.5 psi your typical halfords gauge is +-1psi and your garage is about +-3 ish

so you could be way out anyway you look at it? te big question is does it go down further over the next few days?

+1, but as allready mentioned temp makes a big differance.

My brothers Mille had strange pressure loss, never in the garage. Only on the road.

Turns out to be dodgy valve cores, sod all spring in them as the pressure should maintain the seal, but in use it didn't. Changed the cores and the problem went away.

The guy over the road had even dodgier pressure problems on his race blade. Turned out his £800 carbon wheel was porous.
