Cam chains and guides worn out.

My bike started making a horrible noise. According to the garage, both cam chains, guides & tensioners need replacing. They quoted me £2500, which (according to Parkers) will leave me with a bike worth ~ £1200.

Should a bike really be thrown away after 10 years/35,000 miles?

Two years and 10k left eh Nicky?

Sounds mental for that. You could pick up a replacement engine and swap it yourself for far less - even including replacing the parts in your old one.

I'd be telling them to poke it.

£2500!!! For that? Are they on crack? No way!!! Go elsewhere I'm sure it'll be much much cheaper.

Even a replacement secondhand engine you'd expect to pay around £300+fitting.
A couple of chain and tensioners should even be near that price.

It's quite possible that for lots of tea & biscuits etc plus the cost of the parts, that some kind sould will help you do the work yourself for far less and forget the engine swap.

Like buses, true experts come all at once and I reckon that there's one due around 4.30.

EHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ??????a new engine would cost you far less. Ball park figure of 400 or so on evilbay.

Besides, cam chains guides and tensioners cost less than an engine!
WHat exactly did they say that the problem was?

As IP says, a mate and a lot of tea n biccies and its less expensive. I know as I've done an engine swap.

LOL.

Put it this way, my Raptor only cost 200 quid more than that! I'd expect a gold plated top yoke, and gold leaf encrusted engine for that sort of money;)

Re: Fubar

For that money, I bought my SV, my Mondeo and my 306!

How much are the parts? £300?

over 2k in labour? That's well worth a call to MCN or similar!

Name and shame the dealer!
