Scottish Currency
I came back from my regular work trip to Edinburgh this week with a Bank of Scotland £5.
So, at Tescos in Southampton on Saturday, I bought a couple of bits that came to just under a fiver, the conversation went like this: Cashier: That is £4.50 please Me: Do you take scottish fivers (having been in banking for 25 years I knew they would...) Cashier: Oh, I don't know, I'll just check Cashier 2: I think so but I am not sure Supervisor 1: I think so, ask supervisor 2 Supervisor 2: Yes we do, but only if they have sterling on them  Bloody good job I didn't have one of them tartan euro notes then :p : |
Re: Scottish Currency
We convinced a colleague at work that they had converted to the Euro in Wales.
He felt a right plank when he went to the bar in the hotel near Swansea and said 'Do you accept sterling' :p Sounds like a good 'Dom Jolly' wheeze to set a Bureau de Change at the Welsh & Scottish borders :p See how many folk come up and ask you to change their money :p |
Re: Scottish Currency
That's good of them. Establishments in England and Wales are not required to accept Scottish / Northern Irish notes, even if they do say Sterling on them.

as far as i was led to believe we all stay in the United Kingdom. edit: yes the BOE say its not legal tender in England but neither is BOE notes legal tender in Scotland so it works both ways, hence why the banks have an 'agreement' to take each others tender. |
Re: Scottish Currency
Why did you even ask? I'd just have handed it over, they'd have been none the wiser.
it used to pi$$ me off no end when english people would ask for "real money" in their change when I worked at Annandale Water. My response invariably depended on my mood. |
I live in Glasgow but am originally from Manchester. None of the shops round where my folks live accept Scottish notes. It's true that they can legally reject them and the shops say it's too hard to keep track of the designs which means its easier to forge them. I mist admit, they do love their bank note designs up here!!

When Halifax and Bank of Scotland merged there was uproar in Scotland at the thought that they might not be able to print their own notes. It might still happen as the cost to do so is pretty high. I don't think people up here lime the thought of seeing the Queen on their notes though....!
