Hayabusa speedo issues - drive from front wheel?
 

hello boys and girls of the forum i am going to be building a dominator chop hardtail type bike and want to use a late (2008) busa front end and wheels.

knowing that the speedo is driven from the gear box does anyone know if it possible to drive a speedo from the front wheel?
if not does anyone have any bright ideas how i can get a speedo to work?
i would rather keep the busa front wheel rather than swap for a bandit wheel as i would loose the better breaking advantages of the newer busa.

What are you going to dominate with a hardtail? Sounds painful.

Why busa forks for a start?
You can fix some magnets to the disc front or rear and use a hall effect sensor, or use the setup from the SV1000.

What bike you're using and what speedo you want to use might, you know, help a bit!

Not 100% sure about the 2008+ 'busa but the previous version would certainly be tricky to add the 'classic' on the axle type sensor (as the SV was originally fitted with) due to the design of wheel.

As YC says magnets either in the end of the disk bolts or in the centre of some of the bobbins with a hall sensor mounted on a bracket.

It would be neater to do it off the rear wheel though.

Driven from the front wheel the pulse ratio will be well off, speedo healer might work, might not have enough latitude to adjust.

a honda dominator, i wanted a bullet proof 650 air cooled single with button and kicker and a low milage one came up cheap (1988 its 3 months older than me!). i was thinking busa because i wanted the bigger chunky look of the forks and i wanted USDs with some serious breaks (i was hoping for a twin disk front end). i was going to fit a trail tech speedo. the dominator is mechanically driven from the wheel i believe.

If you are using trail tech then just fit parts... trailtech comes with a magnet and sensor... follow instructions in box.


Just going for looks and good brakes busa forks will be fine.

oh i didmt know that i havnt got the trial tech yet. thanks, or i was thinking drz sm 400 wheels and forks? but would they stop it well enough?

Dominator brakes aren't much crack as stock... DRZ one would probably be OK but more is better.

Busa brakes are crap, they're useless 6 pot Tokicos same as the early GSXR1000 and alot of the late 90s ZX range had. Plenty of GSXRs had their calipers swopped for 4 pot Tokicos or even Bandit 1200 ones because the 6 pots were troublesome and pretty ineffective compared to good old 4 pots. Don't think that because they are 6 pots they are any good, cos they aren't.

But he's putting it on a hardtail chop... so what does it matter?

The 6 pots will stop you... just not quite as much feel as the 4s... won't make any odds.
