Old school shaving

Anyone on here use an old safety (or even cut throat!) razor?

Just started using a double edged one and can't believe I've not tried it before

Was also surprised the number of people who still shave this way...

So... Anybody?

I do prefer a safety razor as I think it gives a closer shave, but you need to take more time over it to not slice bits off your face. I use the Gillette/Wilky multiblade type now for convenience and speed, but used a safety for years. I have considered going back to one now I have time to shave.

I have used a cut throat but sliced my face to bits! :( It was my mate's who got one in France and learnt to use it. It really gives a lovely close shave, but it is a skill that needs to be learnt carefully, my friend often came out with nicks and bits of skin missing until he got the hang of it!

If you have time, the whole shaving brush / lather dish / proper razor thing makes getting shaved a pleasure, but needs plenty of time to make it worthwhile.

I have never got on with multi-blade razors, in order to give a really close shave they pull the hair out of the skin slightly before cutting it, great close feeling, but causes the hair to snap back under the skin - causes some folks masses of irritation.

I can get away with shaving every couple of days so it's not too time consuming, doesn't take too much longer than a normal wet shave but nothing on an electric shave. The whole brush and soap thing makes it more of an event than a chore...

I use a gillette mach3 and that does a pretty good job, but i shave 2-3 times a week cos i hate shaving, i wouldnt use the cut throats as im not 'handy with a blade'.

I like the 5 blade Gillette Fusion---shave Monday Morning and that is good enough till Wednesday morning.Expensive blades but they seem to last well and are really smooth providing you use plenty of water when shaving.

Im a blessed man, still dont need to shave more than once a week with a beard trimmer. Every 2nd week I do my hair at the same time - dont think that would be too clever with a cut throat.

Yeah, me too...

I used a trimmer for years, but the safety razor is much easier on the skin - Boots do a proper cheap one and some basic soap that's good to try out. Not as nice as a proper load of stuff but much better for me than a cartridge razor
