Continuous Insurance enforcement

Don't know if this has been discussed anywhere, I wasn't aware it's coming in in early 2011.

Google it and there's a load of stuff, for example Direct.gov.uk .

Basically if you SORN a vehicle you don't need valid insurance, but if it's not on SORN it MUST have valid insurance, even if it's not actually in use on the road. In other words you will now be guilty of an offence and the vehicle can be taken because you "might" use it on the road. So don't let your insurance lapse, they'll have your bike away.

They may as well arrest me because I "might" rob a Bank.

Bring on the Stasi.

Let me get this straight, If I insured my Bike in September 2010 and renewed the tax in November 2010, Come September 2011 If I decide I'm probably not going to bother insuring the bike til next summer, and leave it in the garage with a couple of months of tax left, Im liable to be prosecuted if I dont bother declaring it SORN until the tax runs out? Because Im paying road tax on a vehicle that Im not insured to ride, and not riding?? Thats ridiculous. who comes up with this ****?

What if I have a 4x4 I use on a farm - private land, very occasionally using it on the road when the weather is really bad and I need a 4x4 to get to work. I keep it taxed all the time but only day insure it when needed. Yeah come and crush it that seems reasonable.

So basically if your insurance lapses, return the tax disc for refund, SORN it and you will be alright.

So a lot of faffing about, maybe a few quid back for your troubles

Re: Continuous Insurance enforcement

It seems pointless to me because I would wager the majority of people driving without insurance are not going to have tax on their car because they cant get tax without insurance anyway, so a lot of the people that get caught out by this will be people who are not actually breaking the law.

I thought you could only make a Sorn when your tax reminder comes through? So what if your insurance runs out at a different time of year?

What a crock of sh1te, so they are basically saying they think we are all law breakers and cant be trusted to have a vehicle taxed but not insured but still use it on the road.
No tax and no insurance show up on every database, ANPR check, etc anyway so what is that gonna acheive.
If the police pull a vehicle that might have tax, they will check it anyway for no insurance.
If the ANPR camera flags it, then they will check it has insurance anyway, so whats the problem.
Hlaf the people who flout the law, dont buy any tax, MOT or insurance.
