Job dilema's Help me!!!!.
 

Right bit of a long old story but here we go!.

About 6 months ago my boss at the time decided that it would be a good idea for one of us two electrical apprentices to help out in the other area he manages as a maintenance manager. So we rotated round thinking it would be temporary for a few months until we finished our apprenticeships. Bloke then in said area decides to get caught fiddling big style and gets boot.

Anyway we've split his role and what we were doing until he was to be replaced by the contractor who they hidden in the books somehow while changes were going on. Then 2 guys left in a similar department (electrical and Instrumentation control to anyone who knows the world of plant process), leaving the department 3 people down on paper. The ICA job's have come up now and are £3k a year more basic and 400 hours OT instead of 332 per annum.

Said problem is do go back to where i was doing my 332 hours which is 10 minutes away from my house or go to other job which is 1 hour from my house. No worries about fuel costs due to company van.

In basic number terms it looks like going from a job with 16 weekends (on call for 10 so not too bad), 12 weeks off a year with 160 hours OT on top of that @ 26K to a job which is 10 weeks on call, 400 hours OT, no weekends and 7 weeks off a year but with the extra 2 hours travelling per day @ 32k a year.

I don't know as the more money one isn't my trained job but if all training is offered then i will go for it. I'm angling more to the other job but purely because of the money and i could do with paying down some of my mortgage.

The extra money is always nice and may well be a progression in your career. Do whatever makes your happiest... only you can say which one that is.

It all comes down to time off vs. more money.

Seems to be a fairly even trade off but I'd look at the amount of time you have off now and what you do then and then figure out how much less that will actually be in terms of time spent with SO or family, time spent riding, and whatever else or will that be enough time off?

Is the money going to be worth the extra time spent at work?
Maybe figure out work hours per year on both jobs and see how much more it actually is.

Just remember money ain't everything, no point having more money then hating every day of your working life.

Personally, i used to spend 1.5-2 hours commuting to work before I was self employed and I hated it.
Made me very impatient, miserable, hate driving etc, didn't ride at the time which might have helped.

make a list pros and cons.

just skimming through - you stand the chance of upskilling which could improve future prospects. you wont be spending anymore money to travel, will only be your time, and you will a few hundred squids more in your pocket everymonth.

Just finished my apprenticeship. That's including OT and callouts.

It is a trade off of money vs. time off.
