Dymag For The Road, Opinions Please.

I'm currently considering a set of Dymag wheels for a bike of mine (not an SV so don't all panic). They are the classic 3 spokes and are Magnesium, and are designed for road race use in that they should pass for use in a TT race.

Now the reason I ask is the seller was a little surprised when in conversation he asked which race series I was competing in and I told him it was for a road bike. Would people recommend them for use on the public highway? Secondly I will need their color changed, I understand that this requires some specialist skills?

Finally what is the going rate for a set of these wheels? I think that they may be a little more than I want to go for considering I saw a similar pair go for less a couple of years back.

They are fine for the road but a bit of a waste.

The guy was asking what race series as they are illegal in most club racing series.

Price = lots but as not many race series allow them they tend not to reach their price, I have a mate with some Dymags in his garage for a carb R6 and he cant shift them for love nor money but he wants £800 for them, they have been in his garage for years.

What bike are they for??

For a popular sports bike i.e. CBR, ZXR, R I reckon £400 - £500 for the bling factor

A waste in what way?

Not for one of the usual suspects. But you price sounds more what I would be expecting.

'Cos I've seen too many problems with them when used on the road, they're not constructed with road durability in mind, which is not to say that they're weak, but their usable life can be hard to determine. Also, as you have suggested, the finishing is very important, magnesium is a funny material and needs correct treatment.

My 'no' is not an authoritative answer, simply the opinion requested, add to this that Harry is quite right when he says that it would be a waste, and understand that there's a questionable, and minor, benefit, plus my own experience of the possible deficits and it just adds up to no.

Because yes you have saved some unsprung weight making the bike a bit more manouverable but you are weighed down by all the road going carp you have to have on the bike i.e. full loom, lights, indicators, flywheel, starter motor etc.

Because Dymags are expensive that are only used when you are trying to get the final 10/10 out of the bike and you have lightened the less expensive parts

But you can brag to your mates in the pub that you have a set of dymags on your bike, woooooo

I believe Sid is referring to the finish of the wheels which do suffer if not looked after.

Dymag Magnesiums are approved for road use and fine if looked after.

Yes the benefit to them is lighter feeling and less rotational mass. If you can afford them then go for it.

Things to watch for is yes they do need proper re-finishing. Any cracks in the paint can cause the magnesium to come in contact with moisture and deteriate. Obviously also they are harder to repair if dinged down a pothole.

You won't actually be any faster on them.
