New owner, service interval and maintenance questions.
Picked up my 'curvy' 1999 SV650S yesterday i have a few questions as i don't yet have a manual.
1. What are the service intervals and what need doing 2. Are there any known problems the SV could suffer from 3. Any idea what could cause the throttle to not self return? What oil would people recommend and after market oil filters, do they cause a problem? Just so you know it is dyno-jetted and has a K&N filter, don't think this should make any difference. Cheers guys :smt040 |
Re: New owner, service interval and maintenance questions.
If you want a workshop manual p.m me, I have a full workshop manual, tells you all you need to know. Aftermarket oil filters are generally fine. I use Putoline oil. Throttle cable itself might cause the throttle to stick, but could be the linkage on the carbs, might needs some WD40.

Re: New owner, service interval and maintenance questions.
What is the history of the bike currently and what (if any) service history has it got?
The "big" one is every 15k miles where valve clearances need to be checked and adjusted if necessary. Most popular complaints with the SV are probably reg/rec (whether correctly diagnosed or not...) and suspension. Oh and wet plug syndrome. Throttle has 2 cables, check what condition they are in, as well as the carb linkage as mentioned. If you are unsure of the service history and know how to wield a spanner, give it a service yourself. Will be a good chance to familiarise yourself and also spot any other potential issues! |
Re: New owner, service interval and maintenance questions.
Hi mate, welcome to the forum.
PM me your email address and I'll send you the 99-02 service manual (PDF file) which includes a periodic maintenance chart. And anyone else reading this who wants it, just drop me a PM. |

Re: New owner, service interval and maintenance questions.
slow turn in, you will almost have to fight the bike in to corners if you ride link a granddad then you wont notice but if your fast paced you will, i also belive the spring rate is lower than stock and thats not good as its to soft
im using a gsxr thou k4 on mine but i have a pointy that uses a different linkage. |
