Scorpion exhaust - legal without baffle?
hi all newbie here so please take it easy on me;). recently purchased a pointy 2004 sv650s, love the bike to bits and a massive step up from my aprilia rs125. The sv has k and n air filter,pc3 and scorpion exhaust which sounds the nuts. today discovered the exhaust has a removable baffle which gives a nice deep tone to that wonderful v-twin,BUT would it be road legal to have the baffle removed?kind regards and thanks in advance

Re: Scorpion exhaust - legal without baffle?
ive got a curvy with a unbaffled scorpion can :) its pretty loud but when at lowish revs through town i dont get many looks. depends on how hot the cops are on bikes in your area. where i am it doesnt seem to that bad. its justa case of luck really and not reving it all the time

Please read the regulations for type approval. Whilst VOSA does not enforce the regs through the MOT, They and the cops do and you are liable to be nicked for breaching the C&U requirement assuming the police officer knows his job. The whole of Europe type approval for motorcycles does require any replacement exhuast system to be e marked or show the eec directive under which it was apporved for use. Specifically for replacement exhausts Exhausts - Replacement Silencer (any silencer not fitted to the vehicle when it was originally manufactured). A replacement silencer for motorcycles and mopeds first used on or after 1 January 1985 must be constructed so that if it was fitted to an unused machine of the same model and date of first use, the machine would comply with the requirements of the Directive or British Standard applicable at that date. Silencers are also subject to a number of marking requirements. No machine used on the road may be fitted with a silencer marked “Not For Road Use” or words to that effect. Similarly, any silencer fitted to a machine first used after 1 January 1985 must be clearly and indelibly marked as follows: Date of first use Marking 01/01/85 – 31/03/91 • Make and type of silencer, or www.vca.gov.uk VCA039 Page 6 of 7 Revision 5 • Manufacturer’s name or mark, and part number, or • Manufacturer’s name or mark, AND “e” or “E” mark with approval number, or • BS AU 193/T2, or BS AU 193a: 1990/T2, or • BS AU 193a: 1990/T3, or • Equivalent international standard marking. 01/04/91 – 31/01/96 • Manufacturer’s name or mark, and part number, or • Manufacturer’s name or mark, AND “e” or “E” mark with approval number, or • Make and type of silencer, or • BS AU 193a: 1990/T3, or • Equivalent international standard marking. 01/02/96 – 31/01/97 • Manufacturer’s name or mark, and part number, or • Manufacturer’s name or mark, AND “e” or “E” mark with approval number, or • BS AU 193a: 1990/T3, or • Equivalent international standard marking. 01/02/97 onwards • Manufacturer’s name or mark, AND “e” or “E” mark with approval number, or • BS AU 193a: 1990/T3, or • Equivalent international standard marking. The European Community noise limits applicable to new motorcycles first used from 1 April 1991 |
Re: Scorpion exhaust - legal without baffle?
I don't see the point tbh, I think it sounds a bit daft - something a sixteen-year-old would do to his RD50 to make it sound 'ace'!
Unbaffled exhausts just sound anoying and don't do much to give biking a good name imo. Just try to remember how you feel when you see/hear a 'wide-boy' Saxo with an exhaust the size of a litter bin hanging under the rear bumber - sounds ridiculous... |

I love the sound of mine with the baffle in. It's plenty plenty loud enough! |
Re: Scorpion exhaust - legal without baffle?
^ 2 above are obviously old codgers
and a saxo's are slow so should be quiet bikes are fast so should be loud just like sports/super cars are loud |
Re: Scorpion exhaust - legal without baffle?
my yoshi sounds ACE unbaffled :) and seen as it has'nt got any markings on it i'll just play the "i didnt know" card :)
