Microsoft office remove / install help?

I've a licensed copy of office 2007 on my PC. Its a two license version and I've used it on two machines.
I've just bought office 2010 (hey it was only £8.95).
I want to put the office 2010 on my pc, but would like to preserve the 2007 license if possible for a later machine, laptop, whatever.

Is it possible to deactivate the 2007 before installing 2010?
What is the best way to proceed - remove 2007, then install 2010, or just go straight in with a 2010 install?

You can install over the top but best practise - You should uninstall 2007 and install 2010 afterwards.

If the next time you go to activate 2007 it doesn't work, simple call the freephone number provided and get an activation code over the phone.

There is no way to manually deactivate the license.

no need at all to remove Office 2007 beforehand. The licence is in the form of a code that you type in, it isnt a file you can move.

If you dont have the original key then you can use third party tools to extract the key from the current instllation. Search on Google for 'recover Office 2007 key'.

If Office 2010 is only a tenner, why not just buy another?

I can only buy office once, or more precisely a 2 machine license once - through my company.
I wanted to 'deactivate' the office 2007 so it can be re-used on another machine. I have all original disks and keys so no problems there.

Just install over the top then, you'll be fine.

For info, I dont know if you have kids or may be a student but you can also buy a full copy of Office 2010 under the educational licence for around £30, extremely good value.

If you install over the top, it leaves some 2007 files in place and it can cause problems afterwards. I've done it and seen it many times! If you can spare the 15 mins to uninistall 2007 first, really do recommend you do that.

Let me reiterate, if MS will not activate 2007 for you next time you install, its a very simple phone call to get that sorted.

We have a 100,000 user deployment of Office and standard practice is an in place installation over the top. Office 2010 has a facility in its install procedure that actually does remove previous versions of the various software components anyway, the advantage of this approach is that it can retain user preferences and settings from the existing installation.

Up to you though.

Re: Microsoft office remove / install help?

lol, cant augue with that.

My experience is based on a 50 user upgrade (slightly less than 100,000!!).

I did it departmentally, first being Sales of around 8 users. All but one kept having issues with Office 2010 crashing out, and Outlook hanging on startup. After the usual remedial diagnosis I ended up uninstalling it all and installing 2010 fresh, which sorted. Also kept user pref's (Outlook anyway) from clean install iirc.

After the upgrade which apparently should have removed 2003 and 2007 I could still see OFFICE## folders which led me to believe it didnt uninstall the old version properly.

So that's what I'm basing my recommendation on! Moot anyways.
