Ambulance Service Crash Card
 

Thought this might be useful for some of you:

Been speaking to a couple of paramedic friends, who were slagging off the ICE USB devices that you can buy for about £20, because they wouldn't look for it, and have nothing to read the data on (not to mention the virus issues).

Personally I wear old fashioned dog-tags, But it turns out they've all been briefed on a scheme where you keep an information card inside your helmet, with an indicator dot on the side of your helmet.

I'd agree the usb thing is a bit of a waste of time, however as an ex-paramedic myself if a patient is unconscious after the basics you'd normally look for a wallet for info, so a basic ICE card in there is probably the best idea. whilst the card in the helmet might seem like a good idea the last thing I'd want is a copper or fireman removing my helmet (for the information) who wasn't qualified to do it.

My first question was 'aren't you supposed to leave the helmet on'.

One of them even said he wouldn't think to check tags even if he saw them, just tends to go for phone and look up 'Home' not even ICE.

Guess I'd just want to have the bases covered as quite often my wallet and phone are locked under the seat, or in a tank-bag which might be nowhere near me by the time they get there.

Best tip I got from them was to put 1CE in yer phone, it's the first in contacts then.

The concern I have with the dot system is also the fact that it is becoming common knowledge so might end up with members of joe public removing helmets - with good intention, but causing further injury. Like Rictus says, generally, most emergency services would check pockets first.

it's wise to have it on your phone to (as I do as well), but I've never known a card to stop working in a crash, but I have a phone.

I've had a Crash Card for about a year in each of my helmets and another card inside my wallet too. We gave them away to whoever wanted one when I was working in the local bike shop. As far as I'm aware they still have them available.

It's a good idea that does help the emergency services know where to look, but just in case (because I was then under a lot of medication and had a stent in my kidney) I had one in a place I knew they'd check... my wallet

It says on the website it's only in use in some parts of England but doesn't say which.

Just had a look where to get one and I've got to ring a number for an insurance quote, my local police are not listed which is not a surprise as they don't have police bikes due to health and safety and therefor cannot do "bike safe"
