Can I use Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 in my SV?

Hi I have a tub of castrol magnatec 10w-40 brand new. Can inuse this for my sv? It's a k5 with 10k on the clock.

Asking cause I think it's designed for cars but what's the difference?

Thanks :)

Re: Can I use this oil?

well you could and may well get away with it, but why would you? as a minimum use bike specific oil, it's cheap enough and designed for the job, bike oils have different additives to car ones.

Cheers Mark.

My advice would be to use the correct oil. There are some cheap alternatives sold by the likes of HG or Halfords.

Somebody ot the Prilia forum put that in. Instant clutch slip.

Re: Can I use this oil?

No, as the bike has a "wet" clutch that runs in the oil, car oil is not suitable and will promote clutch slip. Bikes with dry clutches such as most BMW can use car type oil. You should make sure any oil you use has JASO MA specified on the container, this shows it has been tested and is suitable for clutches that run in oil.

+1 clutch slip, I put some magnatec in a bandit 600 about 12 years ago... If I had the internet back then I would never have done something so stupid.

Maybe something about Magnatec? I ran my GSX750F for 16 years on full synthetic car oil. Admittedly it was cheap stuff like Fuchs GTX(?), Halfords car etc. Never bought bike specific oil until last week (cheap). GPZ500, 550 305, ER5 was all happy on 10W40 car oil too.
Note: According to Wiki, bikes just need to avoid EC spec oil {Energy Conserving (EC) oil can cause wet clutches to slip}
