Respraying advice please.
Can anyone give me some advice on respraying this seat cowl I've spotted on ebay.
I've never done any respraying myself nor do I have any equipment or even know what I would need to purchase to do this myself. So could I have some opinions on which would be cheaper. Obtaining all the necessary gubins and doing it myself or, paying someone to do it for me? Cheers guys. By the way, if it matters my bike is an 06 SV650s Blue, see below. http://i1110.photobucket.com/albums/...d/f8c476c3.jpg |

Maybe its just the angle of the pic but that tyre looks squarer than sponge bobs pants :)

You can either do a spray can job and if you take your time it will come out well. Flat the cowl down well using fine wet & dry then prime, flat, prime, flat, prime, flat. Colour, colour, flat, colour flat colour, laquer, laquer, laquer, done. Probably cost around £60-£80 to get a paint shop to do it. |

currently spraying my curvy lowers and seat infills in metallic pearl and TBH if I was to do it again, id do the prep work then get a professional to finish it off.
A smaller item such as a cowl might be ok to do, but im finding it difficult to get an exact colour match, think a lot of it is to do with the amount of base coat (blue in your case) and the ground coat (pearl metallic) you spray on, let alone the sunlight fade the bike has recieved. Lee |
Re: Respraying advice please.
i bought the same on myself mate.
spent about £70 on paint (from rs paint online), stupidly didnt rub it down properly before i started but it turned out alright, the colour matched well, ....until i applied the laquer and it went all scalely and f-cked up! Id definately say go proffesional, unless its ridiculous money! price it up yourself, but by the time youve got the paint, and wet/dry sand paper etc it probably works out cheaper to pay someone to do it! i found the fit on the cowl isnt £100% perfect either but it is a good fit! also make the guy an offer! i think i got mine for £62 then £8 for postage, i just messaged him first. andddddddddddd it toook about a week for him to make then post so i hope your not in a rush! |
Re: Respraying advice please.
Hi Chris, actually your current cowl looks amazing! Lol.
Seriously I would go professional. I looked at re-spraying some tarmac rash on the fairing but paint alone was £55 (and aerosol at that). I've found a local bike friendly spray shop that will do the whole job (one complete side to blend in) with real paint in a spray booth for £70. |
Re: Respraying advice please.
I've done a few rattle can spray jobs & I'll be perfectly honest & say the finish isn't anywhere near as good as a sprayer can get with the right equipment.
I want mine doing as it's going through a transformation at the moment. I will be using someone that knows what he is doing, dont want to spoil it using rattle cans. |
Re: Respraying advice please.
I think I would go for a professional job on it but the best quote, well the only one, I've had so far is for £80 + VAT. And thats just his estimate. Don't know how happy I am to fork out £96 for it though. Does this sound like a good price?

Re: Respraying advice please.
You need to find someone that does it at home. I was quoted £40 for my Buell fairing from a lad that sprays for Bentley Motors :)
