Crashed helmet, still mint, replace?
 

I bought my OGK Aeroblade II almost four years ago, it was the only helmet in three shops that fit me properly and cost me £150.

Since then the helmet has fallen off a desk once or twice, and been sent down the road three times at +50mph (along with myself), but the helmet is still mint, not a mark on it!! Should I replace it still or am I wasting money?

My wallet says I am talking sense, my head is uncertain, but I have a funny feeling I need slapping and escorting to my local helmet retailer?

motorbike helmets should be replaced every five years or so. check the date of manufacture of the helmet, somewhere on the inside, and see what date it was made. if you have it nearly four years, chances are it was sitting in the factory, transit and then the shop for a while and is due to be replaced sometime soon anyway.

maybe use this oppurtunity to purchase yourself a new lid? you were thinking about it anyway and its a perfect time now coming into the summer....

Once they've been crashed they should be replaced anyway regardless of how old they are. A small light drop of a couple of inches by accident, might be ok, but a crash at 50.....errrr no!!!!

What would you rather have a broken head? it might look ok on the outside that lid of yours, but I doubt it will offer proper protection in a crash TBH

I would have replaced it as soon as I dropped it off a desk tbh! I'd rather "waste" a couple hundred quid on a helmet than take the chance of the gubbins of my current one being compressed and stuff and no offer me the correct protection!

Dizzy's spot on - get a new one now! The pink and hairy thing that lives in there is pretty delicate and has already been protected by that helmet (more than once, from the sound of it). What you have to remember is that, in a heavy impact, helmets are basically sacrificial. The structure is designed to deform and absorb the kinetic energy just like a crumple zone in a car. The outside might still be shiny but the inside is probably dead.

Back to reality...

My OGK helmet was a comfy great fit, but you can pick one up now for £50!? Part of me thinks that's too cheap? But a Shoei/Arai is far too expensive.

Is it really as simple as, the more you spend the more protected you are?

no. the better they fit the more they protect you. if its a £30 lid that fits perfect its going to be better than £1000 lid that dont.

tooooo many people get hung up on lid snobbery without facing the real facts.

the truth is the more you pay the lighter the lid in general, all will protect you in a off ,yes some slightly better than others but as long as it has the kytemark or gold acu markings they will help your head

so fit is the key, then its more price more features/less weight/more bling
