Buying an SV650?
 

Hi guys, new guy here.

I've got my Mod2 coming up in a few weeks and was hoping of getting a SV650 as my first big bike.

I'm hoping of getting the "pointy" faired style. I have about £2000-£2500 budget so I'm wondering what kind of mileage should i expect when buying something from that price. I've seen plenty of SVs similar priced in similar condition but very different mileages. Lower the better of course but what's average and what's a bargain?

Also are the lower fairings easy to buy. Wanting a full faired bike so may need to buy some if the bike doesn't have them already.

Alright Dude.

Firstly, fairings. Incredibly expensive if you buy new and will come un painted. And then you'll need to have them sprayed.

If you decide to get them new from Suzuki then you need to be prepared to take out a mortgage on them. :p

Best bet is e-bay or this forum. People are always selling wonderful items and you'll get a better deal than on the bay.

My advice, if you want fairings, buy a bike with them already on. You may be able to find crash damaged ones (fairings that is) in need of a little TLC for a lot less.


Secondly. Mileage.

Anyone selling their bike privately is going to base the price on:-

-Condition
-Reliability
-How well they've looked after it
-Service History
-Mileage
-Any mods/ extra's that have been done

All I can say is a well maintained bike with 70,000 miles on the clock will be a much better buy than a poorly maintained bike with 10,000 miles.

My opinion is that any bike under 30,000 miles is a low miler. But, again it depends on how it's been looked after.
My first SV had about 15,000 miles on it when I bought it and it did nothing but brake down. That cost me £3000 and it was poo. Now the SV I have has done about 16,000 miles but I've had it from new and looked after it. It's never given me any problems whatsoever.

So if your buying privately, see if you can find someone who knows a little about bikes who can give you point in the right direction.

If your buying from a main dealer... Don't You'll pay a lot more, and you'll be sat on the M25 for 7 hours in the rain. But may be I'm just bitter :smt070

Mod2... the second part of the test.

I know a little bit about looking for used bikes, but more info about the bikes the better :)
Only ever bought 2 125ccs, never something larger and more expensive.

It really pays to be patient and I met someone today who bought a 05 black faired pointy with under 7K that was on offer at £2.5k. I paid the same for my 07 naked with 2,500 miles with loads of extras on it. So the real bargains are out there but obviously low mileage bargains bikes are harder to find. Both example were private sales not dealership or auctions.

If the bikes been well serviced and well looked after and you think you'll be keeping it a while, then I kind of agree with Chris don't worry too much about the mileage find the one you really like.

If you can't find apropriate lower fairings on e-bay or here and have the cash you can get from these places prepainted to your colour code

a bit cheaper than Suzuki's ~ £400

Expect a bike to have about 3000miles a year and see if documentation proves this, then it will have done enough miles to be more likely been maintained well and is unlikely to have been abused or sat unused for too long.

i bought a k7 with 1087 miles on the clock with lowers and cowl from a genuine lady owner in november for the £2900. it had sat in a nice warm garage attached to a new build house.

there are bargains so it pays to be patient.

I'd get a curvy. You'd get a really tidy low milage one for 2.5k

Just remember the sv is a budget bike... The engine is good but the electrics, finish, bolts and other things are cheap and time will show you they all rot and break down. So a 10k bike that's been rode in all weathers might not be as reliable as a 20k bike thats only ever seen the sunshine. Also a lot of first time riders get SVs so its going to get dropped and crashed, so a cat C or D right off (cosmetic or minor physical) can bag you a bargain bike.
My last SV I got at 28k as a Cat D right-off due to the tank being dented and all the panels marked, at 78k the bike is still a runner and made a great winter hack. Cost me the grand total of £600, spent another ton on Scotoiler, heated grips and other things.
