Respraying the bike
 

Hey all,

Could anyone please help me with some advice, or point me in the direction of a thread describing it all...

I'm intending to respray the bodywork from the BMW once I have the 2nd bike, and was wondering how difficult it can be to respray it in your own garage...

Otherwise, I'll spend a bit and get someone to do it properly.

If you even need to ask mate I would be getting the pros to do it for you. Strip the bike yourself and even sand it down if you like but pay the money to get the good finish. You will be much happier in the end.

once you've paid for some decent gear ect you'd be better of paying someone else to do it, unless your plaining on doing it more

and the above, you'll end up spending loads on paints ect if your no good

It's far easier getting a pro job than trying to do it yourself. I used to work as a sprayer for Toyota in Burnaston and I lost count of the amount of people that would ask me to re-spray their cars with Halfords can and expect a perfect finish.

Best thing to do is buy yourself some panels from a breakers yard, or Ebay & have a play before trying out the proper thing.
All I can say is that I was told, preparation, preparation, preparation. I have done bikes in the past with rattle cans & the finish has been anywhere between garbage & pretty convincing, but you will never get it looking like the professionals unless you have the proper gear :). My friend did my SV in the spray booth & the finish is just so nice.

The graphics make a big difference too, somehow a resprayed bike never looks 'right' again, no matter how good the finish, if the little details are missing.

ive done a few bikes, it time that it takes. most people can achieve a decent finish if they take their time however, the pros will use 2pk and that is the good stuff! not for for DIY use, totaly bomb proof as a finish and will last years, if its a small cheaper project bike, i say crack on at home with halfords finest paints!

What about the companies that offer fairing and plastics respraying for trackbikes on ebay for around £150. Looks like good value to me, anyone know if the quality is presentable for "roadbike standard".

Its pointless painting in anything other than two pack. Especially on the tank as other paint will melt when petrol gets on it.

U need about 1 litre primer, 1/2 litre of paint, posh thinners (about 2 litres to thin the paint), hardener (about 1 litre) and cleaning thinners + lacquer if you desire. That should be enough to do the bike including wheels with some to spare.

The gun should be a small one I have seen others use a big gun (for car spraying) and found that they used much more paint to get the same result as most of it was on the floor of the booth and not on the panels.

Stating the obvious but u need a good mask, well vented area and it needs to be warm.

Two pack fumes are nasty...

Gun - £25 (best cheap gun)
Primer - £20
Paint £15 normal finish
Thinners £20
Hardener £10
Cleaning Thinners £10
Lacquer £10
Mask £20

Thats £130 already
