33BHP restrictor prices.
 
I have been offered by a dealer an official suzuki ECU restrictor for a K6 2007 sv650 for £550. I have also been offered the non suzuki brand washer and throttle stop method by the same dealer for £120 or £350 fitted.
Are these prices good or would it be cheaper to buy from somewhere else or second hand?
Also, does it need to be fitted by a dealer to be authenticated for insurance purposes, or can i authenticate it myself?

You should be able to pick up a second hand ECU for roughly £50-£100. It is best to use the ECU method instead of the washer/throttle stop. Come up for sale on here and eBay quite regularly. Make sure it is for your bike though, as I think they changed from 1 plug to 2 plug around 2007 or so.

When I was restricted my insurance company never wanted any proof.

I originally had my bike restricted with an FI kit (throttle stop and washers) and that cost me £200.00. Bike ran kind of funny and rough so replaced it with a restricted ecu which i bought from ebay.co.uk for £40.00. Iv had both forms of restriction fitted on the same bike so take it from me, get the ECU. Much cheaper and far better option for the bike. And alot easier to remove (plug and play) when restriction is up. I see them pop up here very regularly so keep an eye out. Also ebay!

Go for the ECU, As already said they commonly go on here for £30 upwards.

No proof or restriction required by law. As paper proves nothing! If insurance want proof, and i here some do a dyno print out will do fine. Get a real one or one from google/photoshop will do the job.

Not all insurance want proof, but they do expect you to have it restricted. Whether you do or not is another question in itself.....

my insurance company never wanted proof, which was a good job, as its never been restricted (i can tell people now, my 2 years ended yesterday!) i rode round like a tw*t, with a mega loud yosh can on her, i never got pulled once! your choice wether to restrict it at all. most would say if you dont, try not to attract attention to yourself!, if its a first bike, restricting would be a good idea, even if its just until you get your head around the handling and weight.

FFS people if your on a 33bhp licence get it restricted. We had a bike in recently the police brought down for testing as the lad was involved in a non fault accident where someone had pulled out on him, it wasnt restricted and he got well and truely done, bike impounded the lot, really really not worth it.

Had another where the rider had clipped a pedestrian on a crossing, again not restricted, police brough it in to be dyno'd. God only knows what he got for that.

What really boils my p155 is why they ever demanded a dyno run out for the non-fault accident. I can appreciate that it's breaking the law and all that, but if it's not the rider's fault then why the hell would being restricted or not make any difference at all? All they've achieved by dynoing his bike is giving some idiot driver the chance to worm his way out of a claim from the rider. The other case raises my eyebrows as well, the guy clipped someone on a crossing - hardly likely to be out of a 40mph limit so why the need to dyno the bike to see if it had more than 33bhp? 40mph is achievable with far less power, so again I don't see the point.

It's a bloody pointless and discriminatory law in the first place - I'd like to see what would happen if all new car drivers were power restricted for their first 2 years on the road. The bloody country would be up in arms.
