Repairing a broken gear shifter
Ok bought one of these..

Should i put self-amal tape round the peg to 'rubberise' it? |

Well done, looks nice on the bike, and hell of lot cheaper than the oem.
I fixed mine, but i just used a nut and bolt...:smt003 |

self amalgamating should be good to protect your booot. or the right sized o rings for those grooves....and itl look trick

The grooves are designed to take BS110 'o'rings They fit nicely in the grooves and stand a bit proud to give a little protection to your boot :) |

Did you thread lock it? Dont want it to vibrate loose!
