Back brake

Hi,

I was trying to tighten my front sprocket up to 145nm torque as in the manual, my girlfriend was standing on the back brake (all her weight - which isn't much, but still) and the brake was not strong enough to stop the wheel moving.

However out on the road it an lock up in an instant, so should I be concerned?

Cheers guys,
Alex.

No, the brake is okay don't forget you are applying a force through a reduced gear ratio IE small sprocket to big. I use a padded tube through the back wheel on th swing arm to lock up the wheel.

Wouldn't have thought so. Just so long as it will lock the rear under normal riding conditions you can be fairly happy it's good enough. Typically you should be using a mix of brakes depending on what you are actually attempting to do. If it usually feels all right I would not be too worried. Under "emergency" or very heavy braking conditions the rear will most likely be in the air anyway so the rear doesn't add a lot to the actual stopping effectiveness.

145nM torque is a lot to try and stop with one small piston. Next time stick something between the spokes and the swing-arm that'll stop it. (sprocket tightening, not road slowing :) )

Cheers guys - will stick something beneath the swing arm and between the wheel to help me tighten up the front. I saw this achieved in a video - must have been a bike with massive back brake to stop 145nm.

I also managed to snap 1 of the sprocket bolts - note to self - ignore Haines manual torque settings.

Re: Back brake

a 'stanley' type hammer is exactly the right size for jamming through plus it's rubber coated so wont damage the swing arm or the wheel.

if you are trying to undo or do up a nut on the front sprocket beg borrow or evan steel a impact driver wether it be battery or air,i use a 18 volt impact it will undo/do up any sprocket nut, i have never had a nut it wont undo/do up evan single sided swinging arm nuts like you get on a speed triple.as to jaming the rear wheel up or getting some one to jump on the rear brake pedal it might work but its not the recomended way to do it unless you want to risk over pressureing your rear master cylinder or bending your swing arm or stressing your rear wheel bearing or output shaft and bearings, although haveing said that doing it up aint as bad as undoing the nut when its stuck and you have got a 6ft bit of scaffolding on the bar to get it undone
