are these things any good? or a ballache?

I think there supposed to be really helpful and that one seems cheap enough to warrent buying. I use a Dremel to take the old chain off and 1/4 drive 10mm socket and a small clamp to force the split link together for the new one :) Must not forget a suitable drift to splay out the link when I've done.

When I read this it sounds dodgy as hell but must have done it for around 5 years now on a few different bikes and as yet no problem!

Used that design plenty of times. The more you use it the easier it becomes as it can be a little tricky at times to get it lined up. The one I used doesn't come with instructions which is a shame as an explaination of the parts would be useful, not sure if this one will though. The only thing to add is don't use the pin to remove the old rivets without grinding them flat first.

I own the one that Squirrell has tried breaking, and Drew also borrowed it for one of his mates.

I get on with it, don't get me wrong, it's a fiddly bugger but nice and sturdy so you can put some downforce on it if required, me and ValleyBoy bent a Motrax one easily without trying a couple of years ago which cost £60. Squirrell took it back to the shop for a refund and I got one of what you put a link to delivered and had it ever since.

Regarding the sticky out pin bit (let me know if that was a bit too technical ; ) ) I have only ever used that if removing a link, in which case I grind off the top off the pin in the link to be removed and then the pin bit is used to push it through, if you try this without grinding the top of the pin to be removed then it can snap or bend.

Other than that, I just cut through a chain with a grinder if replacing it. Must be fool proof, I've had TheOnlyNemesis and BaP use it too when showing them how to change their chains

I had one of those cheap chain breakers but the chain broke it, so the last couple of times I've used the 'blue tip' chain breaker.
