Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
Help, please!
I'm swapping out the stock shock on my '02 curvy and I can't extract the bottom bolt (experimentally I undid the top bolt and that was fine). I've unscrewed the nut and the bolt now spins freely but won't... pull... through... It seems to be moving freely in the linkage itself, but doesn't want to separate from the mounting holes in the shock. Any ideas, o wise forumites? I've been hauling on it with mole grips, tapping at it from the other end, etc for the last hour and a half and I've rather lost patience for now. D |
Re: Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
Perhaps you are being a bit soft on it - tapping it might not be enough. You may need to get a good sized punch, drift or suitable tool and then belt it with a decent hammer - should punch it out............... are you sure it is clear of any threading?

Re: Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
You may be right about being too gentle. I might be able to pick up a drift and a mallet and give that a shot.
It does seem to be clear of any threading, since it's spinning so freely and not budging. I wish I could be more sure! D |
Re: Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
If your swapping it for an uprated shock you'll be needing a new bottom bolt anyway so just smash it with big heavy things while screaming

Re: Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
Is that the bolt that threads into the shock itself? If so are you sure its totally unthreaded?

Re: Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
You do have the bike supported so the weight is off the swinging arm/back wheel?

Re: Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
The standard shock has no nut on the lower fixing - the bolt screws into the side of the mounting fork at the end of the shock. What nut did you remove?
Are you saying that the bolt turns but cannot be pulled out? |
Re: Stock shock swap stuck bolt strife!
Winder: I like your thinking.
Biker Biggles: I believe so, if there is indeed any thread. Taipan: Yes, up on two speaker stands, of all things. Sid Squid: Unless I'm confused, this bolt goes through the mounting fork and had a nut on the end. It turns but it can't be pulled out. I was a little confused since as I understand it there's no nut on the standard mounting bolt. If I've been hauling on the wrong thing I'll only be relieved, since I'm having nightmares of never getting this thing out. |
